Thelegendary flathead V8 continued into the new model year but with aslight improvement in power, the transmission received an excellentoption for overdrive giving it a bit of an easier-to-manage topspeed, and with its new "ponton" styling found on the MercuryEight, this vehicle became an instant hit. This new design gave theMercury Eight a much more distinct look differentiating it from itscousin, the Lincoln, and although Lincoln was popular in sales thatyear as well, Mercury went on to take honors for most sales andbroke the record amount in its first year after war. The first fewyears of Mercury post-war became a popular car to customize andeven developed a catchy name, the "lead sled". GR Auto Gallery of Indy is pleased to present this one-of-a-kind,custom-built 1949 Mercury Coupe. This vehicle was built for the1983 Chicago World of Wheels event where it ended up taking homefirst place. That credential alone speaks for itself. For a hotrodthat was built over 41 years ago, this Mercury shows in greatshapeinside and out. Powering this Lead Sled is a 327ci V8 with a 3 x 2 carburetorsetup. The power is routed through a TH350 transmission and a9-inch Ford rear end. The suspension and brakes were also upgraded.Highlights include: Rack and pinion stearing, front disc brakes,air ride, a Vintage Air AC kit, and more.
