Asearly as 1951, however, MG enthusiasts received a taste of the carthat would become the MG A when George Phillips drove a sleek,rebodied TD at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. A road version of Phillips'car was proposed to BMC in 1952 as a replacement for theold-fashioned TD but initially rejected in favor of the plannedproduction of the Austin-Healey 100. MG had even gone as far asbuilding a full prototype of the MG A using TD running gear, a 1250XPAG engine, a redesigned chassis, and new bodywork. By 1955, itwas evident that the aging MG TF was overdue for replacement, withthe MG A quickly introduced.Before the official launch of the MG Ain 1955, three aluminum-bodied prototypes were entered into the 24Hours of Le Mans and were quite successful, finishing fifth andsixth in class. As a result, when the MG A was launched shortlyafterwards, the car already possessed a top-level internationalracing pedigree, helping ensure the modern new model's immediateacceptance.Formerly owned by TV superstar and longtime automobileenthusiast David Letterman from 1992 until recently, this 1959 MG ARoadster is a rare and highly sought-after Twin Cam model, markingthe ultimate development of the svelte MG model line.
