Description:

1965 Plymouth Sport Fury Hardtop There once was a time when the Chrysler Corporation was number twoin sales, ahead of the formerly #1 Ford brand. However, a number ofbusiness miscalculations have forced Chrysler to be on the brink ofdisaster numerous times in its history. One of Chrysler's biggestboners was during the dawn of the muscle car era. But with someclever platform reshuffling for 1965 and the introduction of thenew full-size C-body, the Chrysler Corporation was back in thesaddle, and with the addition of the Commando 426 for the PlymouthFury, Chrysler had its first "proper" full-size muscle car. For consignment this 2 owner 1965 Plymouth Sport Fury in 2 doorhardtop form. The sport designation gives us a full length aluminumbody molding, dual tail lights and backup lights, an aluminum rearfiller panel and all the good looks you've come to expect from theMopar camp. This example is in very nice condition, has beenupgraded to a 1978 360ci V8 and a 3-speed automatic for some asskicking muscle car power. Plus, it comes with its original 318ci V8poly engine, an unused factory AC kit, fender skirts, the original14-inch steel wheels, and even a 1957 dual 4-barrel intake alongwith a slew of other parts. 1965 called...they're waiting foryou! ExteriorBorrowing from the Pontiac upfront we see stacked dual headlights,a snappy chromed mesh egg crate grille, near perfect badging, and asolid shiny bumper below. As we move rearward along the fairlystraight side panels, with gaps well minded we can follow the bodybeltline aluminum trim spear which runs the length from stem tostern. All this straight steel is bathed in red paint and trimmingsthroughout are looking great! We note some dullness to the finishalong with a few inclusions, dry spots, as well as some invasiverust in the arch of the driver's rear wheel well. On top is a thinand exciting roofline that culminates with slightly narrowingB-pillars at the rear which frame the rear glass perfectly.Speaking of the glass, it'sclean and clear and is trimmed withshiny stainless surrounds. On the back, the dual tail lights andbackup lights flank a central Plymouth badged aluminum panel on thetrunk with all framed below by a shiny rear bumper. Well polishedchrome 15-inch Cragar S/S wheels are on the corners and are wrappedin deeply treaded staggered width blackwall rubber. InteriorA swing of the doors and I've got black on my mind with yards ofblack vinyl for the door panels and interior seating. All appearvery nice and the front seating has been refreshed with the doorpanels looking like new as well with their embossed sills, shinycranks and actuators, padded armrest and carpeted lowers. Tuckedand rolled low back buckets in wide black vinyl form flank thecentral console thatholds black ball topped shifterwithin a chromeand applique field. The rear bench stretches from side to side andemulates the buckets nicely. Up front, a black padded dash has somefaded silver plastic bezel inserts which house gauges, heaterslides, the factory clock and the factory AM radio. A black steeldash lower adds some nice contrast and has been fitted with somechrome knobs and is looking A-Ok. Clean black carpeting is notedthroughout the floors and the factory black rimmed steering wheelsits atop the fixed column that now sports a Sun tachometer withina chrome pod. DrivetrainA flip of the hood and we are greeted by an nicely spruced upengine bay that takes on a nice patina in its original form. Herewe have a light blue painted circa 1978 360ci V8 topped by anEdelbrock 600cfm carburetor and Edelbrock Performer intakemanifold. An A727 3-speed Torqueflite automatic on the back. Thistransmission throws power rearward to an 8-3/4 rear axle with 3.91gearing. UndercarriageWe note some surface rust on the floor pans, rockers, variousundercarriage suspension and frame parts, but all remainsstructurally sound. There was at one time black undercoatingapplied but has since turned to a grayish tan. There does appear tobe a heavyapplication of body filler to the lower rear quarterpanels where they wrap under the body and clean dual exhaust withstock style mufflers is on for spent fossil removal. We noteunequal length exhaust pipes poking out under the rear bumper andthe driver's side muffler has a slight crunch to it. Independentfront torsion bar suspension is seen, and on back leaf sprungsuspension is working like it should. Power drum brakes are allaround for the WHOAH factor. Drive-AbilityA quick starter and smooth runner when experiencing our test track. The brakes are the most important function to check before headingout to our test track. Thankfully that is the first thing we check,as the pedal in thiscar is verysoft, but the car does indeed stop. The only other noted issue during our drive was the AM radio didnot pick up sounds...do they even broadcast on the AM band thesedays? Otherwise things were smooth sailing with firm transmissionshifts and nice ride and handling on par with cars of the era.Overall a nice experience for this classic mid 1960's cruiser. This '65 Plymouth is extremely cool and has been cared for andupgraded with replacement parts when needed. With its nice sizedV8, tailored interior and dramatic styling, it represents thepinnacle of American styling and manufacturing dominance. In needof some TLC on the braking and paint fronts, but things are stilllooking very good for this classic that'll draw a crowd wherever itgoes, your search is over!
