Summary:
Used 1965 Shelby GT350
Location:
Scottsdale, AZ
Description:

This 1965 Shelby GT350 stands as one example from the limitedproduction of 562 units for its model year, and notably, one of thefinal eight crafted in 1965. It is known as the "Triple Nickel"within the esteemed Shelby community and was dubbed by Ric Kopek as"a fistful of nickels" because of its distinctive "555" Shelbyserial number. Extensive documentation under fastidious stewardshipthroughout its life includes original Shelby invoices, SAACownership history, SAAC VIN verification, prior ownershipdocuments, dealership order request to Shelby and other variousreceipts, period photos and owner correspondence. It was orderednew through Hickey Ford in Albany, NY, Hugh Westlake, the firstowner, lightly campaigned 555 at the Lebanon Valley Raceway, whereit achieved a notable best time of 13.65. The second owner, RogerPierce of Pierce Racing in Syracuse, NY, continued the legacy, occasionally tracking 555 but refraining from formal competitions. In December 1973, Roger transferred ownership to Austin Craig, arenowned Shelby Historian and co-founder of the Shelby AmericanAutomobile Club. Craig, deeply connected to the vehicle's heritage, currently works for Shelby American and actively participated inShelby events during the 1970s, contributing to 555's significancein automotive history. On July 2, 1980, Craig passed the baton toDale Phelon, a notable race team owner and automobile collector, who used 555 as a pit car during races. In 1981, Phelon undertook arestoration project to rectify prior road-rash incurred during itsracing history. This vehicle remained within the Phelon familyuntil 2020, when it was acquired by Donnie Gould, a partner at RMSotheby's and a distinguished specialist in Shelbys and Cobras. Thecar underwent minor cosmetic enhancements before transitioning toits current owner. With just over 800 miles under currentownership, 555 received a thorough undercarriage and suspensionrefurbishment and the replacement of the R-model racing apron, witha factory NOS front apron, bumper and bumper guards, reinstatingthe vehicle to its original stock form. Power comes from thelegendary K-code 289ci Hi-Po engine with high-rise aluminummanifold and finned Cobra valve covers, paired with an aluminum T104-speed manual transmission featuring an NOS shifter, accompaniedby all the authentic Shelby components delivered from the factory. The addition of correct Craig Conley 5-spoke wheels furtherelevates 555's aesthetic appeal. Even the oil pressure gauge wasskillfully restored by the late Jim Cowles of Shelby Parts andRestorations. 39,170 actual miles. ** PREVIEW
