Summary:

Location:
Morgantown, PA
Description:

1970 Chrysler 300 Hardtop This generation of the Chrysler 300 lasted only from 1969 to 1970and they weren't produced in huge numbers. About 21,000 wereproduced in 1970 and of them, only 9,589 were hardtop coupes. At 78inches wide and 224.7 inches long, it was one of the largest carsproduced in this period. In comparison, the Buick Electra 225 ofthe time was 5,715mm while the 300 was 5,707mm long! Seatingcapacity was limited when ordered with bucket seats and seat beltsto five passengers, but we imagine that in the day before seatbeltregulations, a lot more people piled in the back of these landyachts. For consignment, a well preserved '70 Chrysler 300 with just 30,624title verified actual miles! Coming to our Hallowed Halls with bigblock power under the hood, 2 copies of the broadcast sheet, thesales order invoice, and laminated service receipts for the first15 years of the cars life it's evident someone really cared aboutthis full size muscle car. This was someone's Sunday driver andlikely proudly pampered, evidenced by the plastic covers on all theseats, (remember your aunt's sofa? Yep, same stuff.). Not only isthe styling gloriously 1970, but the sheer size of this car puts itin a class of its own, and the nose of the car gets to that classthree days before the tail. ExteriorPure 70's goodness, Mystic Gold Metallic covers this car and whoknows how many gallons it took! The single stage paint has theright amount of shine to it as it is the original finish. V1Ytortoise grain vinyl covers the entire hardtop, an incredible andcreative option for some Chryslers in 1970, and the top is inexcellent condition. If the absolute girth of this car doesn'timpress showgoers, the top certainly will! The front fasciaincludes hidden headlights and opposing trim pieces that angledownward toward the center. The chrome bumper is in good conditionand surrounds the grille like an end cap. Two small turn signalindicator lights protrude from the fender tops and flank anenormous expanse of hood. The rear tail lights with reflectors spanthe width of the tail surrounded by a chrome end cap here as well. The trunk is as long as the hood and exhaust tips exit in a narrowarrangement under the bumper. The hubcaps are original to the carand the body partially covers the back wheels, almost skirt styleand lends just a touch of sleekness to this big box of a car. InteriorSwingingopen the giant doors reveals a white interior. The doorpanel has a smart rectangle design that intersects the pull handleand armrest and contains a 300 emblem on the top. We note a littlesurface dirt we're sure a good detailer can remedy, white is alwaysgoing to need vigilance. Maybe that's why the owner put plasticcovers on the front buckets and rear bench. There's somediscoloration to the plastic but it appears the seats have beensaved and are still looking great. The rear passengers getarmrests, ashtrays, and window cranks. The middle rear passengerwill need to straddle the drive shaft hump but will have the bestview of the three. More horizontal lines on the steering wheelwhich sits on a tilting and telescoping column. A horizontalspeedometer goes to 120 mph and a row of idiot lights arepositioned above it. Big rocker switches control lights, flashers, and wipers because little toggles would just look weird. An AM/FMradio sits in the flat, black dashboard with temperature controlsthat include a dial adjuster. The center console is constructed ofplastic and wood trim lines the shifter panel, matching the bulbouswood shifter knob that is canted rearward. Period clear plasticfloor mats look right at home in their patina tones and haveprotected the black loop style carpet below. The headliner alsolooks to be in great condition. The trunk is pretty basic and cleanand in case you need to know...HUGE! DrivetrainA date correct but non-verifiable as numbers matching due tosurface corrosion 440ci TNT V8 sits in its original place and thesebad boys were rated at 375 horsepower. It's tied to anumbers-matching A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmissionthat sends power to the 8 rear and 3.23 gears. Fortunately, thisbehemoth is equipped with power brakes, disc and drum, front andrear respectively. UndercarriageWe would call this driver quality conditions underneath with somesurface rust and oil spray throughout. There's some advancedsurface rust on the length of the exhaust and the rear axle anddifferential. But overall, it's in good condition considering theage. The true dual exhaust enters stock style mufflers and thenexits out the back as noted earlier. Independent front suspensionis comprised of torsion bars while the rear is cushioned by leafsprings. 235/75/15's are at all four corners. Drive-AbilityYou can pump iron all you want, but once you get inside this car, you're gonna feel like the puny dude on the beach who gets sandkicked in his face. It's cavernous to say the least but it's reallythe exterior expanses that make the car feel big. Minding thegarage opening, curbs and other cars, we launch this ship onto ourtest loop. The 440 cuber sounds pretty good but the exhaust tipsare in the next county so we're not getting the full impact. Thecar weighs over two tons and exhibits good pick up even though it'sno muscle car. It's got a soft ride and a bit floaty on those75-series tires. Hopefully people will see us coming down thestreet and get out of the way because the horn is not working.Wearing shorts in this car on a hot day is going to be a challengeand anyone who's had a plastic sofa cover knows what we're talkingabout. Overall, a great ride with incredible presence with the onlyother notable flaw being the fasten safety belt light beingilluminated even with the car turned off. Depending on where you park this car, you might need to register itin two states. Seriously though, measure your garage or carport ifyou're considering this rare classic. There's no way for people notto be impressed with this car, not just for its size but for theperiod in America and automotive history it represents.
