Description:

The Lancia Fulvia was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963 and produced until 1976. Fulvias are notable for their role in motorsport history. A test of the magazine Road & Track in 1967 summed up the Fulvia as "a precision motorcar, an engineering tour de force". The Fulvia was available in three variants: Berlina four-door saloon, two-door coupé, and Sport, an alternative fastback coupé designed and built by Zagato as more aerodynamic and sportier version of the coupé, which could be used in road and track competitions. The car is powered by a V4 engine mounted to a very crisp feeling manual transmission. All Fulvia models had disc brakes and an advanced chassis that created an excellent handling. The front engine, front wheel drive configuration lends itself to one of the reasons the marque became synonymous with offroad rallying. The Fulvia was an icon of late 60s and early 70s rallying wheen Lancia won the International Championship for Manufacturers - a forerunner to the WRC - in 1972. Production of the Fulvia started in 1963 with a capacity of just 1,091 cc 58 bhp (44 kW), a 72 mm bore and 67 mm stroke. A higher (9.0:1) compression ratio and the assembly of two Solex carburettors increased its power quickly to 71 hp (53 kW). In March 1965 the elegant Lancia Fulvia Coupé 1.2 was introduced at the Turin Motor Show. With its timeless and graceful design, the Fulvia Coupé was considered to be the masterpiece of designer Pietro Castagneros. The Fulvia Coupé was based on the shortened platform of the Berlina (233 cm wheelbase). With the increased capacity of 1216 cc, a power of 59 kW (80 hp) at 6,000 rpm, an improved chassis, only 960 kg weight and a drag coefficient of 0.39, the Coupé from the first series reached a top speed of 100 mph (160 km/h). In the spring of 1967 the Lancia Fulvia Coupe Rallye 1.3 was presented with a 1298 cc engine that produced 92 hp (69 kW) at 6000 rpm. All in all good for a top speed of 103 mph (166 km/h).In this period the mission of Zagato was to design special bodies. Various sports and "fast touring" Lancia cars had bodies built or designed by the great Italian design house Zagato (northwest of Milan, Italy). These include the 1953-60 Lancia Appia Zagato V4, the 1958-1960s Lancia Flaminia Zagato V6, and the 1967-1972 Lancia Fulvia Zagato. Also Zagato build special bodies for Alfa Romeo (Giulia SZ, the TZ, TZ2, 2600 SZ), Fiat, Abarth, Ferrari, Maserati, etc. Lighter and more nimble than the standard-bodied cars, the Sport Zagato distinguished itself in competition, particularly in long distance events, for example in Sebring 12 Hours and Daytona 24 Hours (where earned a class win in 1969). Two series are distinguished in the Sport Zagato; Series I (1967-1969) had some peculiarities. The engine bonnet hinged to the right hand side, the rear hatch, which could be lifted electrically by an handful of centimetres to aid cabin ventilation, and the spare wheel, housed in a separate compartment, accessed from a rotating panel which held the rear number plate. Series II (1970-1972) of the Zagato body was launched at the 1970 Turin Motor Show. Changes included a new 5-speed gearbox, revised suspension geometry, an alternator in place of the previous dynamo. The body was now all-steel, the bonnet was now hinged at the front, and the spare wheel compartment hatch was deleted, new driving lights, side mirror moved from the wing to the door, larger bullet-shaped tail lights. Very early versions of these Series 2 cars were fitted with Series I bodyshells.
