1938 Buick Special Series 40 Sport Coupe

Summary:
Used 1938 Buick Special
Location:
Jarrettsville, MD
Description:

It certainly looks factory stock, but this 1938 Buick Special Series 40 Sport Coupe has been upgraded, according to the seller, with a later Buick inline-eight plus a differential gear that has been changed to 3.60:1, both with an eye on improved highway driving. Despite the departure from stock, the seller says that the Buick still has won a Gold Award from the Buick Club of America, the Special representing one of 5,381 similar coupes built that year. The engine is reported to have been updated and to have traveled 2,000 miles since a rebuild. Described as having a new leather interior, the Buick is said to be free of both rust and apparently, of past rust repairs. POWERTRAIN This Special is powered by a non-original 248-cu.in. OHV inline-eight sourced from a 1948 Buick. With a compression ratio of 6.3:1, the 1948 engine received its fuel mixture via a single two-barrel carburetor and was rated by the manufacturer at 110 horsepower when new, with 206 lb-ft of torque. The current engine is reported to have traveled some 2,000 miles since a rebuild, the seller noting that an upgraded radiator has also been installed. The engine is said to start readily without smoke. The seller says the floor-shifted manual transmission “shifts good.” A “little seepage” from the oil pan is noted. The engine bay presents as stock and clean. EXTERIOR The Van Gogh Green paint is described as 29 years old and in “excellent” condition, with no immediately noticeable blemishes cited. The seller says the left-side windshield bottom leaks during heavy rain. The body seals are otherwise termed “excellent.” The seller states that the Buick has “no rust” and has not undergone rust repairs under his ownership. The Buick’s bodywork shows no outward damage, and all chrome appears to be complete and in excellent condition. The glass and windows are termed “very good.” All lights are said to work; the Buick has no turn indicators. The underside presents as clean, with very minimal surface corrosion visible. INTERIOR The tan leather seating surfaces are described as “new” and show no tears or other signs of damage. The Buick apparently has a rubber floormat that is also termed “new.” The headliner is described as “excellent.” The flip-down rear jump seats appear to be in very good overall condition. The steel dashboard is painted in a woodgrain pattern, presents strongly, and is reported to have full factory trim and all small controls. All instruments, including the original factory AM radio, are described as being in proper working order. The heater reportedly works but there is no air conditioning. The two-level trunk presents as clean. CHASSIS The seller says that the Buick last underwent chassis service 1,000 miles ago. A “little seepage” from the manual steering box is noted. The rear shock absorbers were reportedly rebuilt, with the seller citing no leaks and no functional issues. The manual drum brakes are “working good,” according to the seller. The seller notes “some vibration” from the rear wheels, noting no curb rash. The tires are estimated to be 29 years old. DOCUMENTATION The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean Maryland title in his name. Receipts dating to the early 2000s will be provided. This 1938 Buick Special Series 40 Sport Coupe has been fitted with a later-model eight-cylinder engine and upgraded final-drive gearing.
