Location:
Buffalo, NY
Description:

This 1940 American Bantam Hollywood Convertible, professionally restored in the 1980s and recipient of a 1988 AACA First Junior award at Hershey, is among the rarest of approximately 6,700 American Bantams produced in Butler, Pennsylvania in multiple body styles. The Hollywood Convertible model began as a one-off prototype all-weather cabriolet for Roy Evans, president of Bantam Car Company, the successor to the 1930-’34 American Austin Car Company. This example is described by the seller as “well maintained.” FEATURES The AACA estimates that only about 134 American Bantam Hollywoods were produced. This example is restored and has reportedly been maintained to a very high standard. All NOS or reproduction parts only available from remaining factory inventory were used. The restoration was rewarded with an AACA First Junior Award at Hershey in 1988.The engine in this example is said to be original.New, the 50-cu.in. L-head inline-four produced 22 horsepower in 1940.Power goes to the rear wheels through a three-speed manual transmission. All trim, glass and lighting appear complete and correct.A black cabriolet top piped in red is manual, and “works well” per the seller.Heavy, textured red vinyl covers the seats and door panels. No interior blemishes are reported or observed. The original, cream-colored gauges are intact. The powertrain and undercarriage appear well restored and maintained.Body-matching 15-inch steel wheels include center caps and trim rings. COMES WITH No additional parts or accessories are included in the sale.Car comes with color matched pint of paint for chips etcMemberships to both National Bantam clubs to winning bidder. NEEDS The seller identifies “chips, cracks, and bubbles consistent with the age of the resto.” OVERVIEW The seller says the Bantam was restored to all original specifications in the 1980s.It was the recipient of an AACA First Junior Award in 1988.The restoration displays only paint blemishes from age.Everything aside from the fuel gauge is mechanically functional. The seller identifies this American Bantam Hollywood as “a fun car.” DOCUMENTATION As New York State does not issue titles for vehicles of this age, the seller states that this vehicle will be sold on the proper document in his name for transfer of ownership. This professionally restored and older AACA award-winning 1940 American Bantam Hollywood Convertible is complete, running, and functional (except for the fuel gauge) some 40 years after the restoration was completed. The all-weather cabriolet is identified by the AACA as one of “only about 180 examples” originally built, with an unknown number of survivors. This rare automobile continues to present well and is supported by an active owner’s club.
