1954 Sunbeam Alpine Mark I Convertible

Summary:
Used 1954 Sunbeam Alpine
Location:
Westerville, OH
Description:

Sunbeam built just 1,582 first-generation Alpines from 1953-’55. The seller says he became the fifth registered owner of this 1954 Sunbeam Alpine Mark I Convertible in 2014. The Certificate of Authenticity confirms it as one of 445 “HRO” models, which signifies “right-hand drive, home market.” The car received a 1952 Sunbeam engine block replacement in 1991, his documentation indicates. The car was repainted in the correct factory Ivory color in March 2013 and the same year received a replacement transmission (detailed below), followed by numerous mechanical and cosmetic updates under his ownership. The seller notes numerous “Best in Show” awards for the car at Concours d’ Elegance events, plus AACA First Junior and First Senior awards. “The car is primarily trailered to and from shows except for local driving,” he says. POWERTRAIN The 2.3-liter OHV inline-four was rated at 97 horsepower by the manufacturer when new. The seller says the replacement block received new pistons, rods, and main bearings and that it retains the original high-compression head. The seller says the original four-speed, column-shift manual transmission was replaced by a four-speed with Laycock d’ Normanville overdrive unit with a floor shifter and a new clutch a year before he bought the car. “This was fairly common with this model, as the column shift was problematic,” he states. Under his ownership, he reports giving the car a rebuilt original radiator, new water pump, hoses, and thermostat; new carburetor, distributor, plugs, and wires; stainless steel exhaust system; and a refurbished fuel tank with a new sender unit. The car has been converted from positive to negative ground and has a newer battery and cables installed. To start, the seller says to pull the choke and push the starter button. “Depending upon how long it has been sitting, it will usually start in 4-5 cranks. Leave it on fast idle for about five minutes, and you’re good to go. There is no smoke.” He reports engine weeps at the front and rear main seals, even after replacing both, along with a transmission seal weep. He had the pinion seal replaced and will include new seals to address a left-side axle seal drip. EXTERIOR The 2013 repaint shows well, and the seller reports a few “small areas” where the Ivory paint has cracked and a small scratch on the front of the hood. The red convertible top is described in “very good condition with just a few swirls on the plastic rear window,” and the seller says it operates “with ease.” He says the car has been frequently waxed and has been covered when not driven. Rechromed bumpers, windshield frame, taillight bezel trim rings, and tailpipe tip are indicated, along with a replacement windshield. All lights and trafficators are in working order, and the seller has installed a center LED brake light. INTERIOR The seller reports giving the Sunbeam new carpeting, with new padding and Dynamat sound insulation beneath it. He believes the red leather seats were recovered prior to the car being painted in 2013 but says he has no documentation for that. He describes them as in “very good condition with only a few areas showing some wear.” He reports that the two side glass panels are in “excellent” condition and says the sliding Plexiglass windows have some swirls/scratches. He indicates numerous rechromed interior parts. All gauges work except the temperature gauge, the seller says, though he has fitted an aftermarket unit. CHASSIS The seller reports new kingpins, along with rebuilt shocks and steering box. He says the Coker Classic tires are new, though the DOT manufacturing dates cannot be seen in the provided photos. New shoes and cylinders are indicated for the four-wheel drum brakes, along with a new master cylinder and stop switch. DOCUMENTATION The seller says this vehicle will be sold on a clean Ohio title in his name. He will include documentation for all work he has done, along with a notebook chronicling work completed by the three previous owners back to 1986. He presents this 1954 Sunbeam Alpine Mark I Convertible as show-and-road ready.
