Description:
1967 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S Fastback Plymouth marketing took aim squarely at the Summer of Love crowdwith their young couple filled sales brochure for the 1967Barracuda. Seductive stares, embraced lovers, big smiles, and ofcourse, the requisite cool musician dude. The message was, theBarracuda will be for the hip, carefree crowd and you will havegood times with this versatile car. It's quite a piece ofliterature but then, it's quite a car. For consignment, a 1967 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S Fastback witha title verified 45,802 actual miles. As the sales brochure says,it's a three car car. A four passenger hardtop with the rear seatsfolded down, a two passenger sport coupe. Unlatch the securitypanel and it becomes a shooting brake. "The look is strictly fromItalian GT" they boldly claim and from wherever the inspirationcame, it's a unique car that's been turning heads for 57 years. ExteriorUniqueness begins at the grille with our Ruby Red MetallicBarracuda, which is really two grilles that mirror each other andpoint to the middle where the nose forms an hourglass shape. Insetin the grilles are single round headlights and marker lights allunderscored by a straight chrome bumper, all in great shape. Slightpower bulges on the hood are topped with faux vents and headed bythe first of several Barracuda emblems on the nose. Another appearson the front fender along with the name in script and while we'reat the side, let's note the fantastic profile of the fastback, theroof widening slightly at the rain guard as it pinches between thewindow and C-pillar. The rear window curves and slopes to a shortrear section while a razor straight shoulder line delineates therounded top from the fish-like body. 14-inch Cragars fit the carwell and the rear view with the full aluminum band into C-shapedtail lights is, for lack of a better word, epic! Now that we'veswooned over the design, we're obligated to note some fish flaws.Multiple areas of bubbling in the paint, some significant bubblingin the door jamb with some visible rust in the jamb corner, variousscratches and scuffs, rust on the inner decklid, top side of theright rear fender, parts of the roof, and peeling paint above theaforementioned aluminum band. InteriorBlack patterned vinyl door cards are augmented by a faux burl woodpanel and are in decent condition. Low back black vinyl pleatedbucket seats occupy the front and present well with robust foaminserts, while the rear bench shows a bit of wear, particularlyaround the piping. The black plastic steering wheel with metal hornring is in good shape with just a bit of pitting on the collar.Three gauges appear before the driver split by more faux wood andaluminum and include the "Performance Indicator" which is a vacuumgauge. Simple vent controls and an AM radio are found towards thecenter and an aftermarket gas gauge has been added under the dash.A contoured center console retains the shifter, a slightly curvedstick with a thumb activated top knob, and a flat topped storagebin. Black loop carpet covers the floor and a black stitchedheadliner, and visors rise above the occupant and it all appears ingood condition. DrivetrainUnder the hood is a clean driver condition and rebuilt 273ci V8rated at 235 horsepower. It's fed by a new Edelbrock 4-barrelcarburetor and moved to action by an A904 3-speed automatictransmission. Power heads to the 8 3/4" rear and 3.91 gears withSure-Grip. Drum brakes are at each of the four wheels. UndercarriageClean, driver quality underneath with typical surface rust, hintsof oil on the flywheel cover and rear differential, and dualexhaust that intersect stock style mufflers before exiting in therear via straight pipes. Torsion bars suspension is found in thefront and the back is equipped with leaf springs. We do note someinvasive rust on a floor board where some patchwork has been done, and a bit on the frame rail as well. Our consignor states the gastank and sending unit are new. Drive-AbilityTime to take this fish for a swim, or at least a lap around thepool and in this case is our test loop. She fired right up and intoDrive we went. Barracudas are fast fish, and the car also has somedecent acceleration and with slightly beefed up suspension in theFormula S, handles well. Visibility, of course, is great andbraking is adequate. All the bells and whistles work and we reelthis quick fish back to the mothership. There is plenty of innuendo and implied outcomes in the 1967 salesbrochure for the Barracuda. Today, it's a classic that may or maynot yield the same benefits as portrayed back in the day, butyou'll sure have fun trying in a car with a unique and specialdesign, a fastback for the ages!
