Description:
This 1970 Lamborghini Espada 400 GT Series 2 is an upgraded version of the unique four-seat grand tourer introduced in 1968. The seller reports buying this Italian exotic in 2010 and documents $20,000 in services by a specialty shop in Fremont, California, between 2021 and 2023. The work included a new clutch, differential flex disc, new anti-roll bar bushings, new power brake booster, new cam cover gaskets, emergency-brake pads, A/C system service, and recent tires. With a total of 1,227 built in three series from 1968-’78, the Espada was Lamborghini’s most successful model of its “classic” era. Of those, 575 were 1970-’72 Series 2 models. “Espada” is Spanish for sword, which is symbolized by the car’s rear side badges. Per the title and odometer, the car has been driven just a few miles since 2011. The seller does not know if the miles shown are original and accurate. Lamborghini designed the Espada as family supercar, with more room than the typical “2+2” exotic of the time. The design, by Marcello Gandini while working for Carrozzeria Bertone, combined elements of two other Gandini-designed concept cars, the Jaguar-based Pirana and the futuristic Lamborghini Marzal. The 47-inch-tall Espada’s elongated roofline preserved headroom over the rear seats but resulted in a nearly horizontal rear window. And so, a novel vertical glass panel between the taillights was used to aid rear visibility, an idea later borrowed by the Maserati Khamsin and two less-exotic models, the Honda CRX and Toyota Prius. POWERTRAIN The Espada’s 3.9-liter DOHC V12 used six Weber two-barrel, side-draft carburetors to clear the low hood line. The engine in the Series 2 model was rated at 350 horsepower at 7,500 rpm and 290 lb-ft of peak torque at 5,500 rpm by the manufacturer when new. The seller reports no issues for the powertrain and has included videos of the car starting and driving. As noted above, the differential was repaired with a new flex disc and seals. EXTERIOR The Lamborghini’s bright red paint presents well in the provided photos. The seller reports that areas of the car were previously refinished, with some overspray seen in the engine compartment. Photos show a small area of paint cracking and bubbling at the lower right front corner of the passenger door. No issues are reported for the glass or seals. The seller reports repairs to the headlights and taillights, with no current issues indicated. INTERIOR The Espada Series II featured a redesigned dashboard, instrument panel, and center console, plus reportedly improved rear-seat ventilation. Per the seller and photos, the black leather trim that covers the seats, door panels, dash, and console is in good condition. The carpeting, too, appears in good condition. The car features a three-spoke wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel. As noted, the seller reports the A/C was serviced and working. Drive gears for the speedometer were replaced, and no issues are reported for it or the other gauges. Photos show an old aftermarket Sparkomatic cassette stereo above the glove box. CHASSIS The Espada used front and rear double-wishbone, coil-spring suspension with anti-roll bars. The seller indicates new anti-roll bar bushings. The factory-standard Campagnolo magnesium alloy wheels with knock-off hubs appear in good condition in the provided photos, and the seller reports no vibrations from them when driving. He indicates new Kumho Solus TA11 tires mounted in 2021, and the DOT manufacturing date codes seen in photos confirm this. No issues are reported for the power-assisted four-wheel vented disc brakes. DOCUMENTATION The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean California title in the owner’s name. The seller is assisting the owner of the vehicle, with his approval, to get the vehicle listed online. He has uploaded documentation for the stated mechanical work on the car and will include those original receipts. In its day, this 1970 Lamborghini Espada 400 GT Series 2 was as close as an exotic got to being an “everyday supercar,” with actual seating for four people who are nimble enough to enter its low, luxurious cabin. This one seems ready for some shows and fast touring.
