1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SX Convertible From a 28-Year Owner

Summary:
Used 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme
Location:
Pomona, CA
Description:

THIS IS A RERUN OF AN AUCTION THAT WAS ENDED THROUGH NO FAULT OF THE SELLER OR MISREPRESENTATION OF THIS EXCELLENT AUTOMOBILE. This droptop rocket “is one of the 357 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SX Convertibles built that year,” according to the seller, who has owned it since 1996. He’s provided a photo of the partial VIN on the block, which matches the one on the body. The “F” casting, also on the engine block, is correct for the 455-cu.in. engine, and he states that he’s looking for the factory paperwork he has, which will further confirm the vehicle’s SX status. “The entire body was redone in 1997,” he continues. “This car has been garaged and less than 500 miles per year have been added since then.” He recently moved overseas, which spurred this sale. FEATURES The 320-horsepower, 460-lb-ft of torque, 455-cu.in. OHV V8 was “never rebuilt,” per the seller. It was, however, upgraded with “a new Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor with an electric choke,” an electronic ignition, and a new exhaust system.“Just pump the gas pedal twice then hold it down halfway to start when the engine is cold,” he advises. “It idles high for a couple of minutes then you can kick it down.”In 2010, a new three-speed automatic transmission was installed that “shifts well.”The standard rear axle ratio is 2.56:1, per the 1971 Oldsmobile Dealer Specifications, but it isn’t known if the available 2.73:1 or 3.08:1 gearsets were installed. In 1997, the repaint was done with a slightly different red than the original code-75 Matador Red. It remains “in good shape with no swirls, and some orange peel was addressed in 2010,” the seller says. The black power top “works well, but is in fair shape,” he notes. It came with the car, which is “never driven in the rain, so I can't speak to leaks.”Both the glass and seals are “in good condition,” and the exterior illumination functions as designed. In 2010, bucket seats, a console, and a Hurst Dual/Gate shifter replaced the factory bench seat and column-mounted shifter, the seller notes. The upholstery, carpet, and trim are “in good condition.”Still working are all of the gauges, including the tachometer part of the Tic-Toc-Tach that was added, the heater, and the power windows. An aftermarket stereo system was mounted under the dash in the housing where an optional 8-track player would normally reside. “New speakers were installed in new kick panels.”The optional four-spoke Custom-Sport steering wheel and tilt column are present.“Less than 5,000 miles ago, in 2010-’11, the front suspension was rebuilt and new shocks were installed all around,” the seller reports. The power front disc/rear drum brakes “work well, but are due for replacement,” he adds.Steel body-color 14-inch Superstock III wheels were fitted with new radial tires within “the last two to three years, and they have less than 500 miles on them.”There are “no leaks” in the power steering, the car tracks straight on the road, and it rides well.” COMES WITH Included in the sale are a car cover, the convertible top boot, a full-size spare tire, and the original kick panels and factory 8-track. NEEDS “A couple of small chips,” are in the exterior paint, according to the seller. The power top has a couple of tears in it.He adds, “The transmission leaks, but only while cooling down, not when sitting, running, or when it’s cool.”The A/C and the clock don’t work.“A little shimmy” is present at 60 mph. There’s a missing trim piece on the driver’s door panel, and some wear is evident on the armrest. On both door panels, the carpet inserts are faded and surface wear is shown on the armrest bases. The upper trim on the passenger side of the dashboard isn’t fully secured. The driver’s side window needs an adjustment.DOT date codes, to verify tire age, are not visible in the images provided. OVERVIEW The Y79 SX package was available on Cutlass Supreme hardtops and convertibles in 1970 and 1971. In its final year, it included the 320-horsepower, W32 455-cu.in. four-barrel V8, dual exhausts, trumpet tips, rear bumper with exhaust cutouts, and SX emblems on the fenders. The M40 Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic transmission was mandatory at extra cost. This Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SX has been under the seller’s care for 28 years. The car wears an older restoration that appears to hold up well in the provided photographs. DOCUMENTATION The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean California title in his name. This 1971 Cutlass Supreme SX Convertible features factory 455 power, a highly desirable exterior color, and low production numbers.
