Power comes from a familiar air-cooled 1700cc Volkswagen flat-four,straight out of the Beetle. No, it isn't very fast or powerful, butit is reliable and virtually maintenance-free, so you'll always getwhere you're going...eventually. Routinely driven hundreds ofthousands of miles, these vans are legendary in certain circles,and they come by that reputation honestly. The engine bay is cleanand the motor runs great. It starts with a traditional VW exhaustnote, and things like a fresh tune-up and a new clutch areimportant if you're hitting the road. The 4-speed manualtransmission shifts well and it is easy to get the hang of thebus-like steering with the front wheels right under your seat.
