1974 Chevrolet LS7 Big-Block V8
Financing:
Summary:
Used 1974
Location:
Greene, ME
Description:
The Chevrolet LS7 454-cu.in. V8 was apparently a little too much of a good thing for production cars. Its projected ultra-high-horsepower output and high compression ratio weren’t going to play well with the regulatory climate and the resulting obstacles that were stacking up against muscle cars in the early 1970s, thus this big-block was relegated to an over-the-counter offering in long-block form for “Heavy-Duty, Off-Road Use Only.” Its foundation was a four-bolt-main cast-iron block that was then fortified with an externally balanced, forged-steel crankshaft; forged-steel connecting rods; GM/TRW high-dome, forged-aluminum pistons; a long-duration/high-lift GM solid-lifter camshaft; and open-chamber, rectangular intake port, cast-iron heads. Its compression ratio was about 12.5:1.The seller explains, “This 1974 Chevrolet LS7 engine was purchased from a Chevrolet dealership over the counter in Illinois, via an online auction in 2012, to add to my big-block Chevy collection. It was taken out of the crate and had the accessories added to spin it on a dyno.” Per the included readouts, this LS7 engine produced 538-horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque on an engine dyno a few months after purchase. For testing, it was equipped with a Holley carburetor, a Chevrolet 1968-1969 No. 3933163 aluminum intake manifold, Hooker headers with 2 1/8-inch primaries, and HEI. A water pump was also installed. The dyno sheet says, “dyno 600” for the carburetor, but the seller recalls that it was an 850-cfm unit. ENGINE NUMBERS “XCH” is the factory code for the LS7, and on this engine “TC25XCH0” is stamped on a pad, on the front top of the engine just behind the timing-chain cover. A “74” (denoting 1974), is on the side of the block. CONDITION “The engine has been in a controlled environment since it was dynoed, and has been spun over occasionally,” the seller states. “It is turn-key and ready to use.” GM-applied black engine paint is still present, as are the original “Special Parts Notice,” and “XCH” labels. The “Heavy-Duty, Off-Road Use Only” and “Use 100+ Octane Fuel Only” tag is no longer attached but is included in the sale. DOCUMENTATION The seller states that this engine will be sold on a bill of sale for proper transfer of ownership. The reputation and rarity of the Chevrolet LS7 454-cu.in. OHV V8 will provide conversation starters at any event, and its performance potential speaks for itself. This particular example has already proven its capability on a dyno, and it comes with the aluminum intake manifold, HEI system, and water pump that aided in that effort. It’s never been installed in a car, so this LS7 retains its factory paint and decals, and it’s been spared from being thrashed on the street or strip.
