1977 Chevrolet Monza Mirage 2+2 Hatchback
Financing:
Summary:
Used 1977 100 miles
Location:
Ocala, FL
Description:
Conceived as a streetable tribute to the IMSA Monzas that were highly successful in the Camel GT Challenge Series, the Monza Mirage was built by Michigan Automotive Techniques Corporation and reportedly about 4,057 were sold through select Chevrolet dealers. The buyer would order a white 1977 Monza 2+2 hatchback at the dealership and, once built at the plant, it would be shipped to MATC for the $520 Mirage conversion. Purely an esthetics package, the additions included a front air dam, black treatment around the headlamps and on the grilles, front and rear fender flares, rear spoiler, special striping, and Monza Mirage graphics. Certain factory options, like the 5.0-liter two-barrel V-8, special instrumentation, white-letter radial tires, and sport steering wheel, suspension, and mirrors were recommended. The seller of this 1977 Chevrolet Monza Mirage collects Chevrolets and recalls wanting a Mirage after seeing it at the New York Auto Show and in magazines. He “appreciates unrestored cars,” so when he found this example through a Wanted Ad he placed through Antique Automobile Club of America's bi-monthly magazine in 2013, and learned that the car had been in storage since 1984, he purchased it from the second owner’s family. “The entire braking, cooling, fuel, and exhaust systems, as well as many other components were rebuilt to make the vehicle roadworthy,” he discloses. “I went above and beyond to preserve this piece of history and maintain it without compromising its originality. The Mirage has been certified HPOF (Historical Preservation of Original Features) by the Antique Automobile Club of America, and it was featured in the May/June 2017 issue of the club’s magazine, Antique Automobile. POWERTRAIN According to the seller and the photo he provided of the partial VIN on the block, the 145-hp Chevrolet 305-cu.in. two-barrel V-8 engine is original to the car. He says the timing chain, oil pan, and gaskets were replaced, and the original starter, alternator, and carburetor were professionally rebuilt. The fuel tank was boiled out and new fuel and evaporative lines were installed with an external fuel pump replacing the original (included in the sale). While rebuilding the cooling system, the seller says “the correct V-8-Monza-only water pump was refurbished, the radiator was repaired and flushed out (as was the heater core), and the hoses were replaced using the correct clamps.” A difficult-to-find correct muffler was included in the new exhaust system that eliminated the catalytic converter, but the unit goes with the car. The seller explains, “Once oil pressure is developed from the cranking, a switch will close and power the fuel pump circuit and the car starts right up. It idles fine on a cold start, and there’s no smoke. This engine runs as smooth as glass and has recently been tuned up with original Delco ignition parts.” He notes no apparent leaks, other than “a drop or two” from the four-speed manual transmission, which “shifts fine and makes this car really fun to drive.” A 3.08:1 gear-set is in the non-Posi differential. EXTERIOR Said to be original paint, the seller notes it “shows some wear and the stripes reveal some flaking with indications that they were touched up in a few places prior to my ownership.” But he advises, “The buyer must keep in mind that these cars were produced in limited production, so the paint quality of the stripes was not all that good to begin with. The paint on the fiberglass rear spoiler is starting to lift.” As to be expected in this 47-year-old car’s body, its panels fit “fairly well,” according to the seller. He elaborates by saying that plastic technology of the era wasn’t what it has become today, so there is some shrinkage in the Mirage pieces, which were pop-riveted into place. “The cowl has typical H-body surface rust showing along the windshield edge,” the seller states. “There are a few surface rust pimples on the car here and there, and from behind a plastic panel some rot is peeking through that can be seen in the driver’s lower rear side door jamb.” There’s a “slight wiper mark” on the original radio antenna-equipped GM windshield and some scratches on the rear window. Though the seals have flaws, they remain “soft, functional, and presentable,” per the seller, and all of the exterior lighting operates. INTERIOR The factory gauges, original AM radio, and the heat all work, the seller reveals. Just the clock doesn’t. The headliner is “excellent,” and the vinyl seats and the carpet are in “very good condition,” except for “wear under the gas pedal.” CHASSIS A set of rare optional Chevrolet 10-slot 13-inch polished aluminum wheels were sourced by the seller and installed with new BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires that still have “less than 100 miles on them.” New steering linkage and anti-roll bar bushings and end-links were installed at the same time, and the front end was aligned. NOS Delco spiral shocks were bolted in at the rear. The complete disc/drum braking system was rebuilt with NOS and new “correct replacement parts,” the seller notes, and the original calipers were rebuilt. Even the lines, hoses, and rear emergency brake cables were replaced, and DOT 5 brake fluid was used, which is not compatible with other fluids. He reports “no leaks” from the power steering, and not surprisingly, the brakes will “stop the car on a dime!” DOCUMENTATION The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean Florida title in his name. Additional documentation includes photos of the car in the state he discovered it in before his purchase. Also included is a custom-fit California Car Cover. This 1977 Chevrolet Monza Mirage will introduce an eclectic element to any car collection. The provided video of this car was taken at an AACA Meet a few years ago by an individual car enthusiast, per the seller. 1977 Chevy Monza Mirage Wht Ocala022517 - YouTubeJack R16K subscribers1977 Chevy Monza Mirage Wht Ocala022517Jack RSearchWatch laterShareCopy linkInfoShoppingTap to unmuteIf playback doesn't begin shortly, try restarting your device.More videosMore videosYou're signed outVideos you watch may be added to the TV's watch history and influence TV recommendations.
