This W116-series 1979 Mercedes-Benz 300SD Sedan is offered for sale by a dealer in Warren, Rhode Island. Said by the seller to be “very original,” the car is reputed to have a low ownership history and to come with the original bill of sale. Reeling from the effects of the 1973 energy crisis, coupled with enactment of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards in 1975, the U.S. automotive landscape was experiencing a paradigm shift when the W116 Mercedes-Benz 300SD was introduced in 1978. The world’s first passenger car to employ a turbocharged diesel engine, the W116 300SD was introduced to help Mercedes avoid the fines associated with the mandates the standards dictated. This was of particular concern to the company, because the robust nature of its cars meant they carried quite a bit of weight, which in turned reduced their fuel economy. Fitting a turbocharged diesel engine to the S-Class enabled the marque to offer its most prestigious sedan with the fuel economy of a much smaller vehicle. The 1978 300SD achieved 25 mpg overall, at a time when the Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet was delivering 24. POWERTRAIN The five-cylinder OM617A engine used a Garrett AiResearch turbocharger and was first employed in the Mercedes C111-IID experimental vehicle. So equipped, the car set 16 land speed and endurance records on the Nardo test track in Italy. Subsequent upgrades to the engine saw it garner nine additional records in the C111-IIID. Adapted for street use and designated OM617.950, the 3.0-liter turbodiesel SOHC inline-five was fitted to the W116 chassis, making it the world’s first turbocharged diesel sedan. Output was rated at 110 horsepower at 4,200 rpm and 168 lb-ft of torque at 2,400 rpm. Mercedes’ W4B 025 type 722.1 four-speed automatic transmission routed the engine’s output to the rear wheels. According to the selling dealer, the engine is original to the car. He acknowledges the potential for small leaks, owing to the age of the vehicle but says, “We did not notice anything.” Regarding cold starts, he says, “Turn the key, wait a moment due to it being a diesel, and then turn to start.” He also says the transmission shifts smoothly. No powertrain modifications are reported. EXTERIOR “The blue paint (code 903) is in good condition overall,” the seller says, adding “Some minor imperfections due to age can be seen in photos.” He also discloses, “Some small imperfections on the bumpers can be seen in photos and walk around video.” The sunroof functions as it should according to the seller’s report, in which he also states, “Body seals are in good original condition, showing some wear/dryness due to age, but no leaks.” He goes on to say there is “no body rust” and the glass is all original and stamped. With that said, he does call attention to a small “spider web” chip in the windshield, which he says can be seen in the photos. He declares all lights and signals to work as intended and says there are no modifications to the body of the car. INTERIOR “Seat quality is in great condition,” the seller says and goes on to state, “the [tan] leather interior has been refurbished within the last couple of years.” He declares the headliner to be in good condition with no sags and says, "The carpeting is in great condition with no holes or worn areas noted.” All gauges are said to function, as does the OEM Becker Mexico AM/FM cassette deck, which the seller affirms, “Works as it should.” He says the same for the power windows and door locks, as well as the heat and A/C. All interior trim is held to be intact, save the cigar lighter, which is missing in the accompanying photos. No interior modifications are reported. CHASSIS Typical surface rust is reported for some of the undercarriage’s components, which can be seen in the photographs. The 14-inch wheels show well for the most part, with but minor blemishing, and are stated to exhibit no vibrations. The 205/70R14 Uniroyal Tiger Paw AWP II radials show DOT date codes indicating 2021 production. The spare tire appears to be original and is fitted to a matching road wheel. Declaring no issues with the brakes, the seller also says, “The shocks and bushings appear to be in good shape.” Further, he notes no play in the steering, nor leaks or weeps from the power steering system. No chassis modifications are reported. DOCUMENTATION As Rhode Island does not issue titles for vehicles of this age, the selling dealer states that this vehicle will be sold on the proper document in his name for transfer of ownership. Additional documentation, according to the seller, includes original manuals, the original bill of sale, and service records. Historically significant, this W116-series 1979 Mercedes-Benz 300SD Sedan is among the first passenger cars to be fitted with a turbocharged diesel engine.
