Buick did not produce convertibles at the factory in 1983, insteadBuick contracted with ASC (American Sunroof Corporation) to createthe convertibles. Only a handful of wealthy people were willing topay nearly double the Riviera coupe's price that it took to pull acar off the assembly line and let the GM authorized professionalsat ASC do their custom soft top magic. But the few who did, endedup with a convertible that was like owning a fully custom carbacked by a factory warranty. There were less than 1,700 examplesof the 1983 convertibles built with the desirable V8 engine, whichmakes this one a rare piece of Buick history. That's why thisspecial Buick has been cared for correctly. The white paint has a nice gloss and the full-length burgundypinstripe highlights how straight the sheet metal really is. Thatdistinctly-colored pinstripe also goes nicely with the new fullburgundy soft top. The care is also in the details such as aninvestment in re-chroming the bumpers and a recently replacedwindshield. The original wire wheel covers with special centerinsignia look great combined with the BF Goodrich red-line radialtires. This is loaded with power frontseats, power windows, tilt wheel, cruise control, the DelcoAM/FM/cassette stereo and a power convertible top. The cool digitaldash layout and even the air conditioning controls are 1980sretro-future cool (it will need servicing before blowing coldagain.) Under the hood is the optional 307 cubic inch V8. The V8 engine wasthe right choice to give the Riviera the right kind of torque tomove it around with authority. It makes for a strong and smoothclassic. There are also great all-around driving features like thefour-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, power steering,four-wheel power disc brakes and a fully independentsuspension.
