Location:
Richmond, VA
Description:

1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SL Roadster "This car was introduced to the U.S. market in 1972 as the 350SL. Since then, it has been facelifted, refined, and upgraded, but it's still easily recognizable as an evolution of the 1972 model. Unlike most cars, which slow in sales as they age, the SL has trended upward to today's awesome total. The Mercedes-Benz SL convertible now defines the class. When seriously affluent Americans think of a chic sporter for two, most of them think of this car.". Thanks to Car and Driver's 1989 head to head feature with Chevy Corvette, and a Porsche 911. This 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SL roadster has been meticulously upgraded to pristine original condition. This SL and its unmistakable exterior, is dressed in a classic shade of artic white and like a fine grey leather, has retained its good taste over the many years of its life.Equipment includes a limited-slip differential, a beige soft top, a matching removable hardtop, silver-finished 15″ Gullideckel alloy wheels, fog lights, a Becker Grand Prix AM/FM/cassette stereo, electric windows and passenger mirror, central locking, cruise control, AC (upgraded to R134 refrigerant) and automatic climate control. ExteriorIt's a fine color that lends itself to contrasting the black soft top and grey interior palette. We've said it before that the low, wide stance of the 560 not only looks surefooted and stable but translates to a ride that shares these descriptives. Exterior details include quad headlights, fog lights, a power antenna, and chrome-accented bumpers and trim. The headlights are surrounded by a reflective bezel and accented by a winged marker lights flank a grille with soft corner and the requisite Mercedes star. On the bumper, chrome is accompanied by black structural pieces and bumperettes front and rear, connected visually by the side panel trim just below the waistline. Silver-finished 15″ Gullideckel alloy wheels are mounted with Michelin Defender tires. The car was factory-equipped with power steering, a fully independent suspension, and power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes. The front and rear dampeners, brake master cylinder, and front brake pads, rotors, and calipers were recently replaced.Wheel opening in the back drape over the rear tires while the fronts are fully exposed and together with the laser straight shoulder line results in a strong and sleek profile, especially with the top down. The black canvas top is in great condition and there is absolutely no hazing to the three plastic windows. InteriorThe cabin features two bucket seats upholstered in grey leather along with a matching center console and door panels. Interior amenities include a Becker Grand Prix AM/FM/cassette stereo, electric windows, central locking, cruise control, AC and automatic climate control. The four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a 170-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a clock, and gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel economy, and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows 141,500 miles, approximately 6000 of which were added by the current owner. Grey colored leather door panels provide a striking contrast to the white paint and are in fine condition, as are the grey bucket seats, arguably some of the best in the business for this class of car during this period. They are all original and show little age as they were covered for most of their life there is still robust cushioning and decent support. The storage shelf behind the seats house two high end Focal speakers powered by a new 200 watt amplifier. The trunk is beautifully.. Confidence inducing controls start with the firm steering wheel on a thick column and followed by three clear gauges informing nine pieces of data for the driver and fourteen more with the row of indicator lights below, which have recently been replaced with new. Slightly hazed burlwood backs the center stack which houses the original Becker Grand AM/FM/Cassette radio and simple climate controls and the storage tray below. All of the vent pods have been completely replaced and you have no more worries about this expensive repair as it has been done for you. The AC has been upgraded to R135. The 560's have relatively plush carpet and ours shows very little age. All chrome interior pieces are in place as they were originally.Door jams have been replaced, window seals have been replaced. Cruise control unit has been replaced (and works like a German precision instrument). All replacements on this car have been made with OEM materials. Engine/DrivetrainThe 5.5-liter V8 was factory rated at 227 horsepower and 279 lb-ft of torque. The fuel accumulator, fuel injectors, fuel filter, spark plugs, and spark plug wires were replaced in 2023. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential.Popping the hood reveals a relatively clean driver quality presentation of the 5.6 liter SOHC V8 rated at a respectable 227 horsepower. Electronic fuel injection vaporizes the petrol while a 4-speed automatic transmission transfers power to the rear axle and 2.47 gears. This 560 is equipped with power disc brakes front and rear. The master cylinder and reservoir have been replaced. The engine has recently been tuned with new Bosch distributor cap, wires, plugs and oil changes have been mased annually with LiquiMoly oil. UndercarriageUnderneath, it's driver quality with no visable surface rust and no apparent leaks. Not only is it dry underneath, but it's obvious that Mercedes used heavier duty components than your average mass produced passenger car. Many components are just a little bit thicker, a little bit more robust, and seemingly made to last. Front and rear independent suspension consists of coil springs while the dual exhaust travels in tandem into a stock style muffler and exits with twin tips out back. Drive-AbilityThis car is driven every weekend and garaged with a battery tender. It drives spectacularly! These are well balanced cars with great ergonomics and a fairly potent engine for a sports luxury car from the 80's. This one runs great, handles well, stops, turns, and functions 100%. The timing chain has been replaced for piece of mind. This is another highly expensive maintenance job that has bee recently done (last 2,000 miles) so you have no worries about this. Built to last, indeed. Think about it. A design that went virtually unchanged for nearly 20 years and still looks cool and relevant almost 34 years after it ended production. Here's a final year 560SL, (R107 generation), in fine shape, a nice color, and miles of open air happiness ahead.ManualsThis car has all original manuals and even has the original dealer brochures for the line and colors and options. Additional manuals include a full example of all service/repair manuals. It also comes with manuals on brake bleeding, transmission oil changing and various others.ExtrasThis car comes with the original First Aid Kit, the Tool kits (still in its original plastic bag). And the original spare Pirelli tire. (PS all tires are like new with full tread). 2 original keys. Hard Top storage carrier.
