Dodge's awesome Magnumwagon is the hauler with attitude!When the Magnum dropped, it wasan instant legend. A burly station wagon with HEMI power under thehood? Where do I sign up? Like all the other V8-poweredrear-wheel-drive Chrysler products of the time, there were adizzying array of options and trim levels, with the R/T being themost popular. The R/T combines traditional rear-wheel-driveperformance with a big honkin' V8 up front?I'm still shocked thatthey didn't sell millions of them. Instead, they remain relativelyrare, which is why we're so excited about this 2005 example. It'sthe car you wanted to buy 20 years ago but couldn't quite make itwork. The Mineral Gray Metallic finish is suitably aggressivewithout being over-the-top, and we like the iron fist in a silkglove image that this car portrays. It's all original paint, so thecar has never been wrecked or patched up, and with just under29,000 original miles, it has obviously been loved. That means nowinters, no trailer towing, and none of the heavy-duty jobs thatwagons are usually assigned. It's just a super clean Magnum with nostories. We like that a lot.The interior is finished in grayleather, giving the Magnum a much more upscale feel than the wagonsyou might have enjoyed when you were a kid. From the driver's seat,it's not much different than a Charger or 300M, with a fat steeringleather-wrapped wheel, supportive bucket seats, and a fullcomplement of sporty looking round gauges. It also comes with allthe amenities, including cold A/C, power windows, locks, mirrors,and seat, a tilt steering column, and a decent-sounding AM/FM/CDstereo system. The upholstery is in excellent condition, with onlythe driver's seat showing a few creases from nearly 20 years ofuse, but no splits or tears in the leather?it's holding up reallywell. The carpets are excellent, and the door panels look new. Thiscar obviously didn't spend a lot of time out in the elements. We'repretty sure the back seat has never been used, and the spaciouscargo bay makes this the most practical muscle car you can own. Thecargo bay is also outfitted with a heavy-duty liner so no worriesabout using it as intended. The only possible demerit on the entirecar is that the left rear power window is sometimes fussy, butthat's a pretty small demerit in a car this cool.All those coolpoints come from the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 under the hood. Rated at 340horsepower and a rather shocking 390 lb-ft. of torque, it makes thebig wagon feel downright fast?because it is! It's also fuelinjected with modern controls, so it starts easily, idles properly,and always works like it should. And given the HUGE aftermarketthat has sprouted around these cars, this one remains almostentirely stock except for a set of Flowmaster mufflers and polishedstainless tips under the bumper. It sounds awesome! Otherwise it'sjust the way the factory intended and you can see that it has beenproperly maintained and is super clean under the hood. Even theoriginal decals and markings are still intact. The 5-speedautomatic transmission is the right choice in a wagon, and italways seems to serve up the right gear to make the most of theHEMI's prodigious output. This is still a very fast car! Theall-independent suspension also makes it a capable handler (well,relative to your parents' wagon, anyway) and 4-wheel disc brakesare plenty powerful. Glance underneath and you can see that thiscar is extremely clean with zero rust issues beyond some surfacescale on the heavy bare metal parts. 18-inch alloy wheels lookawesome and carry fresh 235/55/18 Continental radials.Documentationincludes the original factory owner's manuals and laminated windowsticker.It's unlikely we'll ever see a car like this again from amajor American automaker. Given America's obsession with trucks andSUVs, station wagons just aren't as popular as they used to be.That's a shame, because this sucker works REALLY well as both a funcar and a practical car.
