Summary:
Used 1972 Mini Clubman
Location:
Stratford, CT
Description:
The selling dealer, which specializes in classic British cars, is offering a 1972 Austin Mini Clubman Estate that he says, “starts instantly, runs flawlessly, and really looks very close to 'as new' throughout.” He does not know if the car is original or restored but says it has “excellent floors, subframes, body, paint, interior, dash, seats, headliner, drivetrain, chrome, etc.” The seller also notes a new clutch and refurbished brake system and affirms all interior and exterior lighting and other features to be functional. He reports that he has cruised at a steady 80 mph and that handling is precise, with light steering and strong brakes. Notably, this is a left-hand drive car, but with a speedometer calibrated in kilometers per hour. While BMW-owned Mini has used the Clubman name for a wagon-type model, the name originally identified a redesigned Mini starting in 1969 and was used on all body styles, including the standard two-door hatchback. The Clubman was presented as an upgrade to the standard Mini series, which dated form 1959, and was sold alongside the original design. The distinguishing feature of all Clubman models was the squared-off nose. Other features included internal door hinges replacing external, and an instrument panel in front of the driver, rather than the center dash. Mechanically, the Clubman was also an upgrade, having the 998-cc engine standard rather than the 848-cc version. The Estate rode on an 84-inch wheelbase, versus the 80-inch wheelbase of the hatchback. The rear seat folds down to expand cargo room. POWERTRAIN The 998-cc OHV inline-four was rated at 36 horsepower (DIN) and 42 lb-ft of peak torque by the manufacturer when new. The seller does not believe the engine has been rebuilt. He says it starts easily with the choke lever pulled out. There are no known leaks or weeps, he says, and the four-speed manual transmission shifts properly through all gears. A new clutch is indicated, and the car had a recent oil and filter service, per the seller. EXTERIOR The seller does not know if the car had a repaint but states that the brown and white finish appears good with some blemishes from being driven. The glass and windows are described in good condition, with no known scratches or cracks. The seals are “fine with no known missing pieces and no leaks.” He says the car has had “no known rust repairs” and indicates some surface rust on the undercarriage. The lights, horn, and windshield wipers/washers are all affirmed to be working. INTERIOR The car appears to have replacement carpeting, which the seller says is in good condition with no known holes. Interior trim is said to be in good condition. The beige vinyl seats are reported to be in good condition, with no known cracks or tears, and the headliner in “good shape.” The heat, gauges, and cigarette lighter work as intended, the seller states. CHASSIS For 1971, all Mini models went back to the rubber cone suspension, as used on the 1959-’63 models, replacing the hydrolastic interconnected suspension used on 1964-1970 models. The seller says that the car’s suspension is in good condition, but it has no known service records. The seller does not know the age of the Dover Star tires, and DOT manufacturing date codes could not be seen in the provided photos. The chrome wheel covers for the 10-inch wheels appear to be in good condition. The seller reports no vibrations from his 80-mph test drive. The steering tracks straight, and the four-wheel drum brakes function as designed, he says. Reported recent work includes a new brake dual-circuit master cylinder, all wheel cylinders, and brake shoes checked. DOCUMENTATION The selling dealer states that it will provide a clean and open Florida title for the proper transfer of ownership for this vehicle. A rarity in the U.S. when new, and certainly today, this 1972 Austin Mini Clubman Estate seems to be in shape as a fun driver and local show car, and the seller also suggests it could make for a novel and eye-catching delivery vehicle for a business such as a florist. (Flowers not included with the sale.)
