This 1981 DMC DeLorean, a desirable five-speed stick shift model, offers perhaps the next-best thing to driving a DeLorean back in time. The seller reports being the car’s second owner and affirms the super-low miles are accurate. The Carfax report has only minimal information but shows the car had 10,981 miles in March 1986. Initially announced to the public as the “DeLorean DMC-12,” a reference to its targeted $12,000 sticker price, that name was later abandoned as production costs skyrocketed. The correct name for the car is the DMC DeLorean, but the DeLorean DMC-12 moniker remains in common use as well. Three years after DeLorean Motor Company stopped building its intriguing stainless-steel-bodied sports car in Northern Ireland, the enormous global success of a certain film franchise conferred pop-culture icon status upon this gullwing-door two-seater. Forget James Bond’s trick Aston Martin. Doc Brown’s time-traveling DeLorean is probably the most recognized movie car on Earth. Just try to find a 10-year-old who doesn’t know what a DeLorean is. They might not know the car’s designer, Giorgetto Giugiaro, or that Lotus did the bulk of the chassis engineering, or the strange fate of the company namesake founder, but they can all tell you what happens when the car hits 88 mph. POWERTRAIN The rear-mounted Peugeot-Renault-Volvo 2.85-liter SOHC V6 engine was rated at 130 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 153 lb-ft of peak torque by the manufacturer when new. The seller believes the engine to be original, and the accumulated mileage actual. A quick, smoke-free cold start is reported for the fuel-injected V6, and the seller says there are no leaks or weeps. The five-speed manual transmission shifts properly through all gears, he states. EXTERIOR The DeLorean’s body was made by essentially gluing 304-grade stainless steel to a fiberglass under-structure, which was then attached to a steel backbone chassis. The seller states the body is in good condition and that it might have a few “hard-to-find” blemishes. The gullwing doors are affirmed to operate as designed. Glass is described as in good condition, with no seals leaking. The chassis was factory-coated with epoxy, and the seller reports no rust. He says all lighting is working. Photos show a clean undercarriage. INTERIOR According to the owner, the car’s carpet is in good shape, and the interior trim is intact. The black leather upholstery and seat adjustments are described as fine, though photos show seats have light crinkling from normal wear. The steering wheel shows considerable color fade. The DeLorean’s headliner is in good condition, and the small power windows and door locks operate as designed, per the seller. Both the heat and A/C are working, he states. The gauges and what appears to be the original AM/FM cassette stereo are said to work. CHASSIS The seller says that the DeLorean’s suspension service is up to date, and the bushings and shocks are fine with no leaks. A 2015 DOT date code is seen on one of the front 195/60R14 Mastercraft Avenger Touring LSR tires. (The larger rear tires on 15-inch diameter wheels should be 235/60R15.) The factory alloy wheels have no pitting, curb rash, or vibrations, the seller states. The unassisted steering is said to track straight with no play, and the four-wheel disc brakes function as they should, per the seller. DOCUMENTATION The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean Washington title in his name. This super-low-mile 1982 DMC DeLorean, aka the DeLorean DMC-12, is offered by its second owner. Not quite a museum piece, it appears to show just light wear.
