New-in-Crate Chevrolet LS7 V8 Engine

Summary:
New
Location:
Mount Vernon, OH
Description:

“This LS7 engine was bought new by a friend of mine who saved it untouched until his death two years ago,” the seller explains. “The gentleman’s widow then gave me the first chance to acquire it. I have had it for two years.” Stricter emissions requirements, inflated insurance premiums, pushback from ardent safety groups, and more created a hostile environment for high-performance cars in the early 1970s. This climate ensured that Chevrolet’s LS7 454-cu.in. OHV V8 wouldn’t be factory installed in a passenger car for sale to the public. Instead, this high-powered, high-compression engine found its way to its fan base via over-the-counter sales as a long-block assembly. Its foundation was a four-bolt-main cast-iron block fitted with a reciprocating assembly consisting of an externally-balanced forged-steel crankshaft, forged-steel rods, and high-dome forged-aluminum pistons. A long-duration/high-lift GM solid-lifter camshaft was employed, as were open-chamber, rectangular intake port, cast-iron heads. The 12.25:1 compression ratio necessitated 100-octane fuel. ENGINE NUMBERS The factory code for the LS7 crate engine is “XCH,” and this example has “TF27XCH7” stamped on the machined pad located on the front top center of the block. A “7.4” is cast into the side of the block. The seller adds, “The crate measures 41-inches long, 37-inches wide, and 36-inches high,” and the engine part number “XCH 396 5774,” is stenciled on it. He believes the LS7 may date to 1973, based on “353” being where the engine block date code typically is. However, in most instances the block date code begins with a letter for the month followed by one or two numbers for the day and one or two numbers for the year. Additionally, the block casting number “14015445” is listed in the sources we’ve consulted as being introduced later than 1973. Consequently, we can’t confirm the engine being from any specific year based upon the photographed casting and stamping information available to us. CONDITION “The engine looks like it did the day it was bought new,” he comments, “and it has always been stored in a heated atmosphere (see attached photos). It has never been out of the crate, and it has the original plastic cover over it. All original stickers and tags are in place.” DOCUMENTATION The seller states that this engine will be sold on a bill of sale for the proper transfer of ownership. With a suitable intake manifold, carburetor, headers, and ignition system added, this LS7 454 engine is capable of 500-plus horsepower. Its performance potential and legendary reputation among gearheads make it an excellent choice for any automotive project.
