Refurbished 1966 Morris Minor 1000 Convertible

Summary:
Used 1966 Morris Minor
Location:
Stratford, CT
Description:

The Morris Minor 1000, introduced in 1948, remained in production until 1971, making it one of the world’s longest-running single models. The Minor was one of a slew of very small post-war British cars intended to offer affordable, economical personal transportation. Yet, thanks in large part to work by renowned engineer Alec Issigonis, the Minor featured advancement such as unitized construction, rack-and-pinion steering, and independent torsion-bat front suspension. As a result, the very small rear-wheel drive Minor (just 155 inches long on an 86-inch wheelbase) offered room for four. A convertible (“tourer” in British-speak) built until 1969 looked quite jaunty and mixed an element of fun with the car’s practicality. Like some other inexpensive convertibles engineered in the ’40s and ’50s, this one keeps the side window frames stationary, with the top pulled over them when raised. The selling dealer is offering a 1966 Morris Minor convertible from the car’s final series, which arrived in 1962 and received further updates in 1964. Most prominent was a new 1,098cc four-cylinder engine to replace the previous 948cc engine, though the “1,000” badge remained. That upgrade might not have seemed like much on paper, but it enabled a top speed of about 75 mph, versus 65 or so before. The seller reports major refurbishments for this Minor, including a fully rebuilt engine, a new interior and convertible top with boot cover, plus other items noted below. Notably, the seller affirms solid original floors and body for a car that he says can have a deserved reputation as a “rust bucket.” POWERTRAIN The selling dealer says that the Morris Minor’s 1.1-liter OHV inline-four is fully rebuilt, from bottom end to top. He says this included a ported and polished cylinder head, so perhaps the engine serves up a bit more than the 45 horsepower and 57 lb-ft of peak torque claimed by the manufacturer when new. The water pump, alternator, and wiring harness are also indicated as replaced. There are no known leaks or weeps, and the transmission shifts smoothly through all gears, according to the seller. The replacement alternator and wiring harness should give some added peace of mind to those who know British cars. Per the seller and photos, there are no apparent leaks or weeps. EXTERIOR The seller states that the red paint, which appears to be a respray, is “good quality with no swirls but just a few tiny blemishes and no chips.” He suggests that it is fine for local or regional-level shows. Some of the chrome is indicated as new. The new convertible top is said to be in good condition, and the glass is good with no cracks. The seals are reported to have no cracks and to keep the rain out. As noted, the seller affirms there is “no serious rust.” He adds, “It looks to have been well taken care of, because it is unheard of for these cars to be in this condition.” The underside photos support this assessment. All lights work as intended, the seller states. INTERIOR According to the seller, the red vinyl interior is new. Photos show the carpet has no holes or worn areas, and trim seems intact. As seen in photos, the car has an added Smiths combination oil pressure/coolant temperature gauge below the dash on the left side. The seller says the heat and gauges function as designed. CHASSIS The seller reports that the Morris Minor’s front suspension was rebuilt “in the last couple of years.” He says the car is “effortless” to drive, with no issues reported for the chassis or steering. The seller reports the 185/70R14 radial tires as new, though the DOT manufacturing date codes for the Eldorado Tourmax front and Uniroyal Tiger Paw rear tires could not be seen in provided photos. The four-wheel drum brakes are said to function as designed. DOCUMENTATION The selling dealer states that it will provide a clean and transferrable Massachusetts title for the proper transfer of ownership for this vehicle. Some receipts will be included with the sale. This 1966 Morris Minor 1000 Convertible has numerous mechanical and interior refurbishments on a car that was reported to be “rust-free.” It appears ready to continue its mission as a true “slow down and smell the roses” kind of touring car.
