Though it might not appear as a restomod externally, this 1975 Land Rover 88 Series III 4x4 has been completely remade into a hotrod of sorts, and you might even call it a sleeper. The body and interior seem to be the only elements left stock, as this Landy packs the punch and refinement of a later fuel-injected Land Rover 4.0-liter V8, five-speed manual transmission, coil-spring suspension, power steering, and power brakes. That’s like a quantum leap over the vehicle’s original 70-horsepower four-cylinder engine, four-speed transmission, leaf spring suspension, and no power assists. Most of the elements added to this Land Rover are what defined the later Defender, though this conversion lacks the full-time four-wheel drive. The exterior belies the fun performance that lies beneath, with the gray paint showing patina, fading, discoloration, and various dings in the body. FEATURES A unique conversion brings this 1975 Land Rover 88 Series III nearly to Defender specifications.The transplanted Land Rover 4.0-liter OHV V8 was rated at 190 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque.An aftermarket aluminum radiator and electric fan were installed in the build.A five-speed manual transmission replaced the 88’s original four-speed.Coil-spring suspension replaced the original leaf-spring suspension.The seller says the frame was galvanized in the rebuild.The Land Rover has power steering and power brakes added.The front seats appear to be from a Land Rover Defender.A tachometer was added.The speedometer was replaced with a GPS unit, so true mileage is not known.Spotlights were installed on the front bumper. OVERVIEW This 1975 Land Rover 88 Series III was given a V8 and five-speed transplant.The rebuild extended to the chassis, with a galvanized frame and coil-spring suspension.Power steering and brakes make the vehicle easier to drive.The body retains a stock look with ample patina.The interior is also left largely stock, and you can still hose it out. DOCUMENTATION The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean Virginia title in his name. If there could be a sleeper among Land Rover Series models, this 1975 Land Rover 88 Series III 4x4 sure seems to be it. It packs the V8 punch along with many other modernizations from later models.
