This very early right-hand-drive 1936 MG TA Midget Roadster was restored prior to 2015, according to the seller, who states that the chassis and engine numbers are original and matching. All bodywork and paint were completed during the restoration, and new leather seats, door panels, carpet, and dashboard wood trim were installed, preserving the original gauges and steering wheel. The mechanical restoration was completed at the same time, and the car appears to continue to present very strongly in the photos provided. POWERTRAIN The TA’s 1,292-cc OHV inline-four, with 6.5:1 compression and two SU 1-inch carburetors, was rated at 50 brake horsepower at 4,500 rpm and 59 lb-ft of torque at 2,500 rpm when new, mated with a four-speed manual transmission with synchromesh only on the top two gears. The seller states that the engine is original and “runs good, with good oil pressure.” Cold starts are said to be made with the choke and no smoke. The transmission is described as in “good condition.” A “minor oil leak, typical of a British car” is reported. EXTERIOR “Some blemishes and chips” are noted in the red finish, but “no dents” per the seller. All original trim appears complete and highly polished. The windshield “appears to be original and is in good condition,” per the seller. The folding top and side curtains are also identified as “in good condition and have never been used in the rain” according to the seller. No modifications from new have been made to the originality of the restored exterior. All lights are reported to work, although there are no turn signals. INTERIOR The tan leather seat covers, door panels, and tan carpet are described in the seller’s words as “still like new.” The large original tachometer and speedometer/odometer are mounted in a new burled wood dashboard trimmed in leather, with a smaller gauge and switch cluster in the center. The speedometer is reported not to be working, and the odometer reads 4,074, thought to be miles recorded since the restoration, although the true mileage is unknown. The MG was built without a heater. CHASSIS The restored undercarriage presents very cleanly. The unassisted steering is described as “good.” All suspension service was undertaken during the restoration, and the bushings, shocks, and brakes all remain in “good condition” per the seller. Restored 19-inch wire wheels are identified by the seller as “good, with minor spoke repair needed.” The age of the unidentified 4.50 x 19 tires cannot be determined in the photos provided. DOCUMENTATION As New York does not issue titles for vehicles of this age, the seller states that this vehicle will be sold on the proper document in his name for transfer of ownership. This 1936 MG TA Midget Roadster is one of just over 3,000 TAs produced between 1936-’38. The TA was the first of the T-series MGs that culminated with the TF of 1954-’55, all standing on the shoulders of the original MG C and D Type Midgets of 1931-’32. From a total of just 294 C and D Type Midgets came the prewar TA and TB and the postwar TC, TD, and TF. These were cars that established the MG Car Company as a foremost builder of light, body-on-frame sports cars at affordable prices that changed the way sports cars were viewed.
