A spacious and fashionable full-size Ford of the early 1960s can be just the ride for weekend and holiday jaunts to distant destinations during the warmer months. Make it a convertible, and the fun factor rises exponentially for many. This 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 Sunliner Convertible is a suitable candidate for just such excursions. “It’s restored and features excellent paint and interior, and a new convertible top,” the selling dealer notes. The previous owner, who had the work done, reportedly held the title to it for 20 years. POWERTRAIN The seller believes that the two-barrel, 170-horsepower, 292-cu.in. OHV V8 (code W in the VIN) with dual exhausts is original to the car, but it has not been confirmed. “After a couple pumps of the gas pedal, turn the key,” he says. It starts “smoothly, does not smoke, and runs great.” Its three-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission (code-4 on the warranty plate) “shifts perfectly through all the gears, but does leak a little following prolonged storage,” he adds. Its code-1 rear axle houses 3.00:1 gears. EXTERIOR Though he isn’t sure of when the car was repainted in its code-V Chestnut, the seller comments, “The finish is in excellent condition with no swirls, blemishes, scratches, dents, or chips. All of the body panels are believed to be original and are in excellent condition, and there’s no rust.” The bumpers, grille, body trim, and fender skirts are straight and very bright, but the hood emblem shows some wear. The new convertible top operates as designed, the glass and seals are “excellent,” and there’s “no evidence of water leaks.” All of the exterior lights work. INTERIOR “There are no cracks in the dashboard, and the door panels, carpet, and seats are in excellent condition, except for one tear in the left side bottom of the seat [and a crack in its lower trim-see photo],” the seller says. The factory instruments, owner-added Stewart Warner gauges, and the heater/defroster function properly, and the trim is complete. An AM radio is present but he’s not sure if it works. CHASSIS The last suspension service is not known, but the seller reports that “the shocks and bushings are in really good shape.” For an added measure of safety, a dual-circuit master cylinder was added to the power-assisted four-wheel drum brakes, and there are no issues with the system’s operation. Original wheel covers conceal 14-inch steel wheels fitted with whitewall tires of an unknown age, as the DOT date codes can’t be seen in the photos.“The steering wheel points straight and the car drives great with no play or vagueness in the wheel, and no leaks from the power system,” he concludes. It also rides “beautifully.” DOCUMENTATION The selling dealer states that it will provide a clean Ohio title for the proper transfer of ownership for this vehicle. Due to a reciprocal agreements with the state of Ohio, the selling dealer is required to collect sales tax if the winning bidder resides in Arizona, California, Florida, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, or South Carolina. This 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 Sunliner Convertible appears to be prepared for habitual summertime cruising.
