The 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle answered customers’ calls for an intermediate-sized car, as the full-size models had grown positively huge and the recently introduced compacts, such as the Chevy II and Corvair, were too small for some. This 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Convertible is sized “just right” and was purchased by the seller a little more than two years ago. He finished the car’s stalled restoration and reportedly returned it to stock condition, including its 283/Powerglide powertrain. “The restoration had been started several years ago and I finished it with the bodywork, painting, and assembly,” says the seller. The car, in Goldwood Yellow over black vinyl, appears in very good overall condition. POWERTRAIN This Malibu’s powertrain includes a 283-cu.in. OHV V8 and Powerglide two-speed automatic transmission. The engine is a replacement dated from 1967 and it has approximately 300 miles on a rebuild, according to the seller. That rebuild included a 0.030-inch overbore. The seller says the engine starts easily, with a few pumps of the gas pedal, and idles well. The choke is said to work well, too, and there is no reported smoke from the engine. The Powerglide transmission is also said to shift smoothly. EXTERIOR The “916” paint code on the trim tag indicates this Chevelle was originally painted Daytona Blue, but it underwent a color change during the restoration and is now Goldwood Yellow. The seller says the car had been partially painted when he purchased it, and he finished the job within the past nine months. The finish is said to be in good shape, with no scratches or swirl marks, but a few touched-up chips. There are “no dents” in the body and “no known rust,” but the seller notes previous bodywork included repair work on the floorboards, trunk, and rear quarter panels. The manually operated black convertible top is said to be in good shape and operates well, with no known leaks—although the seller admits he’s driven it in the rain only once. The seller also says the car’s glass is in “above average” condition, with no scratches or cracks, while the seals and weatherstripping were replaced during the restoration and remain in great shape. All the exterior chrome and trim show well, too, and the seller reports all the exterior lights work. The bodyside moldings and rocker panel trim appear original and show some wear and tear, including a few minor dings and scratches. INTERIOR According to the seller, this Malibu’s black vinyl interior is “just the way the General built it,” from the front bench seat and bright dashboard insert to the AM radio. The seat covers and carpet were replaced during the restoration and appear in very good shape, with little apparent wear. The door panels and dash pad also show well, with some wear evident in the door panel trim. There’s also some mild wear seen in the steering wheel rim. The gauges are reported functional, along with the heater, but the original AM radio does not work, notes the seller. CHASSIS According to the seller, this Chevelle’s chassis is “very good,” with some corrosion on the passenger’s side treated with a rust inhibitor. Some additional and common rust was found at the body-mount areas and larger washers used to compensate for the issue were installed. The seller also reports the entire brake system was redone, from the shoes and drums to the master cylinder, brake lines, springs, and more. The seller also reports the shocks, springs, and bushings are in good shape and the power steering system has no leaks. “The car drives nicely and doesn’t wander,” says the seller, who also added P185/75R14Uniroyal Tiger Paw tires recently. They’re mounted on the stock 14-inch wheels with wire-style wheel covers. There are no reported blemishes or curb rash on the wheel covers and while the tires’ DOT date codes are not visible in the photos, the seller says they’re “new.” DOCUMENTATION The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean Kentucky title in his name. Additional documentation for this restored and 283-powered 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Convertible includes receipts for the paint and bodywork completed during the seller’s ownership, along with parts receipts. The overall presentation for this first-year A-body appears very good and the seller notes it’s a nice “cruiser.” Chevy definitely hit the mark when it aimed for the middle with the Chevelle.
