Ford’s Torino Cobra was one of the muscle car era’s giant slayers. When equipped with the 429 Super Cobra Jet engine and the Drag Pack, like this Calypso Coral 1970 Ford Torino Cobra, it was capable of 13-second ETs straight off the showroom floor, making it a rival for the quickest big-block Chevelles and Hemi-powered Mopars. This example was “meticulously restored to factory specs,” according to the selling dealer, and is also said to be in “fantastic condition.” It spent time in the Oregon-based Brothers Car Collection and the Marti Report shows it was sold originally through Damerow Ford, in Beaverton, Oregon. It is one of 1,475 Drag Pack-equipped Torino Cobras produced for the year. POWERTRAIN The SCJ 429-cu.in. OHV V8 high-compression engine was unique with its four-bolt block, heavy-duty crankshaft, forged aluminum pistons, high-lift solid-lifter camshaft, unique cylinder heads, 780-cfm Holley carburetor, and more. It was rated at 375 horsepower, but its output was believed to be considerably higher. In this car, the seller asserts the J-code 429 Super Cobra Jet is in good-running condition, with no reported smoke and no known leaks. The seller believes that the engine was replaced under warranty by Ford. The seller states, there is the correct stamping of "Dove A" denoting that is is the J-code Super Cobra Jet 429 block. Of the SCJ 429, the seller says, “It starts right up.” The engine is paired with a C-6 three-speed automatic transmission that is also said to shift smoothly and was recently refreshed. As part of the Drag Pack, the drivetrain also included a 3.91-geared Traction Lok rear differential. EXTERIOR The Calypso Coral paintwork on this reportedly “rust-free” Torino Cobra is said by the seller to be “immaculate,” with no blemishes. The finish appears to have a good shine, while the exterior trim and chrome also appear in great condition. The car also wears a front spoiler and a shaker hood scoop. The glass and seals are also reported to be new and in very good condition. All the exterior lights are described as functional. INTERIOR The restored black vinyl interior, with its bench seat and column shifter, also appears in very good condition, with the seller reporting the condition of the seat covers, carpet, and headliner as “perfect.” There is essentially no visible wear on them, while the door panels and dash pad also appear in very good shape, although there are plugs on the dash pad that appear to cover holes that may have been from previously installed aftermarket instruments. There’s also some wear around the rim of the steering wheel and some scratches on the steering column’s collar. The seller reports “minor movement” in the plastic shifter bezel. All the gauges reportedly work normally, as does the heater. In place of the radio is an Eighties-era Toshiba cassette deck and is said to work. CHASSIS According to the seller, the chassis, suspension, and brake elements are in very good shape, with no known issues or needs. There are also no reported vibrations on the highway, with the car rolling on reproduction F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas bias-ply tires mounted on chrome Magnum 500 wheels. All are said to be in great shape, with no reported blemishes or curb rash on the wheels. The BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires show 2022 DOT date codes. The original tires are included with the sale. DOCUMENTATION The selling dealer states that it will provide a clean and open Oregon title for the proper transfer of ownership for this vehicle.
