Financing:
Summary:
Used 1973
Location:
South Paris, ME
Description:
This 1973 Volkswagen Type 181, which was marketed as the Thing in the U.S. for 1973-'74, was manufactured in Mexico, where it was sold as the Safari. It is functionally the same vehicle as a Thing. The seller, who is helping his grandmother get the vehicle listed online, describes this VW as having a "complete restoration." He says the engine is a replacement and reports that the vehicle has no history of body damage. A repaint and replacement top are also indicated. The seller says that the Volkswagen “runs great and is dependable” and has no current needs. True mileage is not known. Volkswagen began building the Type 181 in 1968 as a utility vehicle for NATO military forces in Europe. It used parts from other VWs, including, of course, the air-cooled flat-four engine. While early models had the reduction-gear, portal-axle rear suspension from the VW Type 2 Bus, later ones (including the car offered) have the semi-trailing arm independent rear suspension without the portal axles. The Thing was the only four-door convertible on the market at the time. In the U.S., VW advertised its removable doors and fold-down windshield for making the Thing an “instant dune buggy.” FEATURES This 1973 Volkswagen Type 181 had a complete restoration, per the seller. The seller indicates a rebuilt replacement engine.New, the air-cooled 1.6-liter OHV flat-four was rated at 46 horsepower. The engine gave 72 lb-ft of peak torque at 2,800 rpm.VW claimed a top speed of 68 mph.Photos show a clean underside. The bare-bones interior was painted metal with plain vinyl seating and rubber floormats. The seller says that the VW has never suffered any body damage.Chrome hubcaps appear in good condition. COMES WITH No extras are mentioned. NEEDS The seller mentions no needs for the vehicle. OVERVIEW The seller describes this 1973 Volkswagen Type 181 as restored. The vehicle has a replacement engine.Per the VIN tag, this Type 181 was built in Mexico. The vehicle is functionally the same as the 1973-'74 U.S.-market Thing. DOCUMENTATION As Maine does not issue titles for vehicles of this age, the seller states that this vehicle will be sold on the proper document in the owner's name for transfer of ownership. The seller is assisting the owner, his grandmother, to get the vehicle listed online. By any name, this 1973 Volkswagen Type 181, or Thing, is not a common sight today. Restored and with a replacement engine, this one should be an attention getter wherever it goes.
