The seller, the owner of a sports car restoration shop in the Washington, D.C. area, reports purchasing this 1961 Triumph TR3A Roadster in 1989 out of 18-year dry storage and then starting a complete, body-off restoration in 1990. He says the car, believed originally sold in Texas, had been acquired by his brother-in-law in 1971 and put into that long-term storage. The customized part of this build is a professionally reworked front apron to relocate the headlights from on top of the hood to the grille. The seller says he was inspired to do so by the design of the 1952 Nash-Healey sports car. Other alterations include a rollbar assembly, front/lower skidplate, and 16-inch Panasport wheels. The restoration included an engine with an overbore, plus other modifications for higher output, as noted below. The work, including repaint, was completed around 2004. The seller reports adding about 5,500 miles since then, and he believes the miles shown to be original for the car. More recent reported work included valve adjustment with new lifters, pushrods, timing chain and tensioner, plus an oil change and general tune-up. New tires and front brake rotors and pads were also installed, making the distinctive Triumph ready to drive. FEATURES The original 2.0-liter OHV inline-four engine was rebuilt.An engine overbore to 87 millimeters increased displacement to 2.2-liters.The seller installed a “mild” performance camshaft and K&N intake filters.The electric fuel pump is controlled by the dash knob.The entire wiring harness was replaced.A spin-on oil filter conversion, gear-reduction starter, and electronic ignition improve reliability.A replacement radiator core and thermostatically controlled auxiliary cooling fan were installed.The car has a Jet-Hot coated Monza exhaust system.The heater core was replaced, and a Mazda blower fan replaced the original.All suspension, hydraulic, and electrical components were replaced in the restoration.A ¾-inch front anti-roll bar was installed to improve handling agility.Stainless-steel hardware was used in several places.The seller says the body is “super straight,” with proper gaps.He fabricated the rollbar from 1.5-inch steel tubing and included side impact bars.The rollbar is bolted through the floor and into the frame outrigger mounts.The 205/55R16 Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires show 2022 date codes.All underbody panels were sprayed in a thick ‘chip-guard’ prior to painting body color.The back sides of all panels were sealed for rust prevention.The soft top is believed original and is reported to be in good shape.The seats are leather, with matching vinyl for interior panels.An aftermarket tonneau cover was modified for the rollbar. NEEDS The drivetrain reportedly weeps “as much as any 1960s vintage British car, but nothing excessive."The seller reports a dime-sized surface rust spot at the forward edge of the rear lid near the gas filler cap.The vehicle has not been set up for side curtains, as it was used as a “fair weather” car.The trip odometer is not working.The carpeting shows some signs of wear on the rear parcel shelf and center tunnel.The seller indicates a slight shift linkage rattle at 3,000 rpm.The 16-inch Panasport wheels show “a slight hint” of alloy corrosion under the clearcoat.
