Rocket-Powered 1955 Oldsmobile 88 Holiday Coupe

Summary:
Used 1955 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight
Location:
Westbrook, CT
Description:

Fifties cars of all sorts were huge when it came to color and presentation. Eye-popping visuals were strongly embraced by buyers at the midpoint of that pivotal automotive decade, even before towering tailfins came into vogue. The 1955 Oldsmobile 88 Holiday Coupe stands as rolling evidence. The 1955 model year was hugely successful for Oldsmobile, which rang up 583,179 sales, its best effort to date. Among those automobiles were an impressive 85,767 examples of the 88 Holiday two-door hardtop, including this one, which the seller purchased at auction two years ago in the condition you see here. Its restoration was completed in 2010, according to the seller. Though specific details on that process are scarce, it’s clear that this Oldsmobile has at least received a comprehensive cosmetic refurbishment. Its colors, inside and out, will grab anyone’s attention and hold fast. It offers immediate visual gratification to whomever becomes its new owner and solid mechanicals to back up its good looks. POWERTRAIN This 88 Holiday Coupe is powered by a 324-cu.in. Oldsmobile Rocket V-8. Fed by a Rochester 4GC, and rated at 202 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and a robust 332 lb-ft of torque at just 2,400 rpm when new. It’s unknown whether the engine was rebuilt as part of the restoration, but the seller reports that the engine starts readily after two pumps of the accelerator and is free of leaks. At the very least, the engine bay appears to have been detailed and refurbished at the time the car was restored and remains in excellent condition. The engine’s deep green color, with contrasting yellow lettering, appears correct. Some surface corrosion is visible on the exhaust manifolds and on the intake manifold at the base of the carburetor. The four-speed Hydra-Matic automatic is correct for a 1955 Oldsmobile and is said to shift well, with no leaks. EXTERIOR The exterior is finished in a Coral over Bronze two-tone combination that was applied when the car was restored in 2010. The color scheme presents very well but the seller notes that a few chips can be located. There is no visible rust or corrosion, and the seller says water does not leak into the car. The windshield and other glass are in visibly good condition. The brightwork presents well. The vertical block letters that spell “OLDSMOBILE” in the center of the massive grille are all present, aligned properly and seemingly in good condition. All the exterior lights work properly, according to the seller. The Oldsmobile flipper wheel covers appear to be free of any corrosion or scrapes. Views of the car’s undercarriage reveal only a few areas of surface rust, such as the suspension control arms, or missing undercoating, as seen on the side of the spare-tire well. INTERIOR The seller describes the 88’s overall interior condition as excellent. He believes the seat surfaces were renewed during the restoration, and the Morroceen-and-cloth seat covers do present very well. The steel dashboard is finished in the Coral body color, and all of its small controls and expansive bright-metal insert panels show exceptionally well. The black carpeting appears to be in excellent shape, with no holes, tears or areas of noticeable wear. The factory electric clock is present on the passenger side of the dash. All the instruments are said to work, but it’s not known whether the factory AM radio is still functional. The seller describes the car’s headliner as being in excellent condition. It’s important to note that the trunk is in what appears to be exceptionally good original condition, with only a few dots of surface corrosion on what looks to be original factory paint on the trunk flooring. The heater also functions properly, according to the seller. THE DRIVE No issues are reported with this Oldsmobile’s performance on the road. The Firestone radial tires appear to have most of their tread life remaining. The suspension is entirely stock, with no excessive play reported from the manual steering. The seller reports the suspension bushings and shock absorbers are still in good shape, and says there are no issues with the car’s brakes. With its substantially freshened appearance, and overall good condition, this 1955 Oldsmobile 88 is ready to take you on your own holiday.
