Vintage Race Car: 1985 Pontiac Trans Am on a Dillon Chassis
Financing:
Summary:
Used 1985 Pontiac Trans Am
Location:
Hesperia, CA
Description:
This 1985 Pontiac Trans Am, a fully purpose-built race car, is reported to be a three-owner car that originally competed in the SCCA Trans-Am series and still bears its SCCA decaling. Described as now eligible for vintage racing, the Trans Am is powered by a NASCAR-style OHV racing V8 coupled to a four-speed racing transmission with square-cut gears. Built on a respected Dillon-fabricated chassis, the Pontiac has a gutted, competition-style interior with a full roll cage and racing seat. Reportedly stopped by Wilwood racing disc brakes, the Trans Am is described as further having a Frankland Racing competition rear end now fitted with 3.61:1 gears. The seller says the car has undergone a body-on restoration. POWERTRAIN This Trans Am is reportedly powered by a NASCAR-style, Chevrolet-sourced 379-cu.in. OHV V8 with unstated output. The engine is said to date to the 1980s, and includes a 3.5-gallon dry-sump oiling system. The seller reports that the oil in the sump tank must be heated before the engine can be started. The manual transmission reportedly has no functional issues. Some powertrain drips are noted. The engine bay presents as very clean and displays competition modifications including over-and-under tubular exhaust headers, braided stainless-steel lines with AN fittings, and a racing belt drive. A four-barrel carburetor with dual accelerator pumps provides the fuel mixture. An aluminum racing radiator can also be seen. EXTERIOR This Trans Am consists of a fiberglass body atop a Dillon tubular-steel frame. The red and light blue paint is reportedly new and “beautiful,” with possible small scratches and chips listed as blemishes. There are no reported interior water leaks, and the seller states that the Trans Am has “no rust.” The car is fitted with a rear aluminum spoiler and mounting hardware. The exterior shows race graphic and decals, but no outward damage. The windshield glass is reportedly new. The brake lamps are said to work as mandated by SCCA and SVRA competition rules. Based on the photos, the underside presents as generally clean, with minimal surface corrosion and some chipped paint. INTERIOR The Trans Am’s interior consists of sheet aluminum with a single red fabric and vinyl racing seat and a demountable competition steering wheel. The seller reports that the interior was restored before the car was placed on sale. The seat material is termed “okay.” There is no carpeting or headliner. The aluminum dashboard is reported to have undergone recent restoration work. A racing-type harness is present, along with what appears to be an onboard fire extinguishing system. An MSD ignition box and coil is affixed to the dash. The full complement of AutoMeter instrumentation is said to work. The Trans Am is equipped with a rear-mounted racing fuel cell. CHASSIS According to the seller, the Dillon tubular-steel chassis and suspension underwent service following every race. The front suspension’s geometry was reportedly changed to make the car work better in corners. No issues with the manual steering are cited. The seller recommends replacing the shock absorbers, and notes that the chassis utilizes Heim ends instead of conventional bushings. The Trans Am has four-wheel Wilwood disc brakes. The seller says efforts are underway to diagnose and correct “shaky” front brakes. The wide-five racing wheels have “no vibrations to 180 mph.” The age of the Hoosier racing tires is unknown, but the seller says an additional set, with rims, will be included in the sale. DOCUMENTATION The seller states that this race car will be sold on a bill of sale for the proper transfer of ownership. SCCA logbooks, covering all races going back to 1989, will be provided. A full-on race car, this 1985 Pontiac Trans Am has reportedly undergone chassis sorting by its current owners and is said to be eligible for vintage competition.
