1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SSIf youre confused as to why people refer to Chevelles and Malibusas the same car, its because Malibu was a trim level of theChevelle from 1964 to 1977. The Malibu wasnt a separate modeluntil 1978. No Chevelles originally had a woodgrain console. But ifyou see one with a woodgrain console now, its likely from a MonteCarlo. There was a version of the Chevelle only available in Canadathat had a slightly different grille and trim. It was called theBeaumont.For consignment, a really excellent adventure into a restorationthat was full off and full-on quality finished. A simple stunner ofan interior, a straight and true exterior with tasteful paint, anda real runner under that hood in the form of a 454ci LS5 V8 beautywith high scores during judging and a numbers matching correctdrivetrain.ExteriorFor 1970, the face lifted Chevelle moved an impressive 634K units.Not only did that high-profile success earn GM big money, it alsosolidified the nameplate as part of Chevys oft romanticizedgolden era. At the front of this coupe, a split grille hangs aprominent "SS" emblem between a small "CHEVELLE" script,stainless-trimmed T3 headlights and an original re-chromed bumper.Opposite that bumper, a cowl induction hood leads the eye to freshglass thats seated in original stainless frames. At the base ofthose frames, chrome door handles, a chrome drivers mirror andwhite-tinged "SS454" badges complement correct wheel trim. And atthe back of the car, a second original, chromed bumper hangs astandard Super Sport inlay. All bathed in near perfect ClassicWhite and wide black stripes racing up the middle of the hood andtrunk lid. Topping off the bottom of this car are 14-inch Magnum500 SS center badged wheels all wrapped in Firestone Wide Ovals onall 4 corners.InteriorIts correct combination of bench and bucket seats that are firm tothe touch, encased in black vinyl, original belts, and high backs.In front of those seats, a straight Super Sport dash frames newinserted OEM gauges clean and pristine provide all the telemetryyoull need for those hot laps. Below that dash, black carpetfloats an original, re-chromed shifter that would make an airlinepilot proud, and this is inside a correct console and color-keyedfloor mats with red, white and blue Heartbeat of America stitching.At the sides of that carpet, door panels center classy stainlesstrim and requisite "SS" emblems on bright handles and supple,comfortable armrests. In front of the driver the steering wheellaps a black column. And behind the passengers, the cars fullyrestored trunk is finished with a correct jack and full-size sparetire. Headliner is nice and tight and is also black, and where theshoulder belts hang.DrivetrainA great looking original and numbers matching orange blocked 454ciLS5 V8 graces a very clean and restored engine bay. Chromed valvecovers, orange heads, clean exhaust manifolds, and a chromed aircleaner cover add to the mechanical jewelry, and it just goes onand on with soft supple hoses and clean wiring. A single correctRochester Quadrajet 4bbl carb is atop, and a correct CS Hydramatictagged TH400 in on the back but is missing its partial VIN stamp. A12-bolt 3.31 posi rear is on the way back.UndercarriageClean and rust free nearly as close to showroom as you can get, wehave F41 independent coil springs up front, and a 4 link with coilsprings on the rear. Power disc brakes upfront, and power drums onthe rear, and dual exhaust with Turbo mufflers added can be seen.The suspension looks like almost new, as does the floor pans, andframe.
