Lotus offered its Seven roadster as a kit from 1957-’72, and kit makers have generally modernized the engineering since then. The seller reports building this 2023 GBS Zero from a kit that he bought from Brian Ball Racing in Golden, Colorado. “I worked on the car, along with professional and technical support from GBS, for about four years,” he says. The seller used the 1.8-liter engine from a 1999 Mazda MX5- Miata, which he modified for track duty with numerous heavy-duty parts. The transmission and rear axle are also from a Miata. The seller can provide a full list of all parts used in the car. Many are highlighted below. When he completed the car in 2022, the seller coordinated with the DMV and the California Highway Patrol to get the final title and registration as a Specially Constructed Vehicle (SPCNS) under Vehicle Code Section 580 and SB 100. The car was assigned a 2022 model year designation, per the California vehicle information label, which also notes the body as “1965 Lotus 7.” The seller also obtained a smog-exemption certificate from CARB, so this car is legal to drive in California. He states that it has been set up for track driving, but that all 350 miles he has driven have been on the road. Now retired, the seller says he will be traveling too much to enjoy the car.
