For the final model year of the fourth-generation Corvette, Chevy offered a Collector Edition. Of the 5,412 built, only about a quarter were soft-top roadsters like the 1996 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible presented for sale here. This fully optioned car is said to be “in outstanding, as-new condition.” Though it has some aftermarket upgrades, the seller notes that “none of the modifications required altering the vehicle in any way.” It represents the last of the C4 Corvettes, as well as the only C4 to benefit from an OBD-II system, and it comes complete with all original components, ready to be restored to its original state if its new owner so chooses. POWERTRAIN The LT4 5.7-liter OHV V8 under the hood was rated by the manufacturer at 330 horsepower when new. It allowed the Corvette to sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and complete the quarter mile in 13.3, per in-period testing by Motor Trend. The seller reports no problems with cold starts. He further says there are no leaks or weeps and that the six-speed manual transmission shifts “as new.” The car is equipped with a Hurst short-throw shifter, but the “original ZF shifter and all hardware was retained in excellent condition” and will be included with the sale. The same is true of the original exhaust, as the car is currently fitted with a Corsa exhaust system. EXTERIOR The Collector Edition Corvette Convertible features chrome badges and is finished in iconic Sebring Silver, the color made famous by the Sting Ray concept of 1959 and the split-window coupe of 1963. The seller describes it as “excellent, original paint” with no body blemishes. He also states that the black convertible soft top “is in as-new condition, with a clear rear window.” He adds, “I have not experienced any leakage.” The glass and windows are also said to be “as new” and the seals “excellent, as new.” INTERIOR Though it’s not visible in the photos provided, the headrests of the Light Gray leather sport seats should feature “Collector Edition” embroidery. The seller describes the condition of the perforated leather seating surfaces as “as new,” and says the same of the carpet, roof, and interior trim. The car has had sill protectors and a leather console pad with a debossed Corvette logo added. Both the heat and the air-conditioning are reportedly working, and the gauges, stereo, and power windows and locks are also all said to be “as new.” CHASSIS The seller has not observed any play in the car’s power steering. He says that the suspension, bushings, and shocks are all “original” and in “as new” condition and notes that this Corvette is equipped with the optional Selective Ride Control, which was newly available for 1996. The factory X brace has been replaced with a Vette2Vette No Flex Frame Stiffener Bar System, in part to facilitate the Corsa exhaust installation, but the seller notes that this update also has “the added benefit of improving chassis stiffness.” He adds that “the original X brace and all attaching hardware was retained in excellent condition.”The seller estimates that the Nitto tires the car currently wears are about seven years old, and the DOT date code visible in one photo does date that tire to September of 2017. He adds, “A set of OEM Goodyear GS-C radials come with the car and are in almost new condition. I decided to replace them when I purchased the car as they were over ten years old.” DOCUMENTATION The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean Georgia title in his and his wife’s names. Additional documentation for this 1996 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible Collector Edition includes an Experian AutoCheck report current as of April 1st, 2024. The seller, who is the car’s third owner, says he has “performed all maintenance on the car since purchased” in 2017 and that he is happy to answer any questions. With fewer than 25,000 miles on the clock, only reversible modifications, and all original parts included, this C4 Collector Edition is a veritable time capsule capturing the pinnacle of its generation.
