However, engine-cooling issues and quality concerns caused Chief Corvette Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov to advocate the new model’s postponement to 1968. While a potential disaster for Chevrolet, this last-minute decision yielded the final—and what many enthusiasts believe to be the best—second-generation Corvette Sting Rays, showcasing exceptionally clean and virtually impeccable styling with minimal embellishment. A total of 22,940 Corvettes were produced for 1967, of which the majority, numbering 14,436, were convertibles. Not including the competition-only 427 CI L88 engine, three Mark IV big-block engines were available for the Corvette, ranging from the 390 HP L36 and the triple-carb L68 developing 400 HP, to the wicked, solid-lifter, triple-carbureted L71 mill factory-rated at 435 HP. Priced at a heady $437.10 option cost, the L71 mill was selected by 3,754 speed-hungry. Still available at ListedBuy!
